Sea Star steering…. Found one in a box of parts… is it of any use?

Background: Prior to the Arima purchase. I had a mid 50's project boat.  The boat came with an old 60's Mercury 50HP and bins of misc. pieces the former owner had collected for the project.  I still have the motor but really have no use for it.

So this week I've been slowly organizing the garage and got to that last bin. I figured I'd pull out all the controls for the old Mercury and see if I could get a few dollars for it. When I pulled out the controls, it turns out there's also a Sea Star hydraulic steering system in that bin... 🤷♂️ who knew? 🤣.

So the question:  Is this worth playing with and keeping for use on the Arima or is this a clear it out of the garage and let someone else deal with it?  At the moment, I know "nothing" about hydraulic steering systems other than those that have them, swear by them.  So what do I need to know???

Do not - repeat, DO NOT - throw it or give it away.  As long as it's fairly complete, it would be a great addition to your Arima.  They are durable, fairly simple, and parts are still available, even though the line was bought by Dometic.  Full kit is currently ~$1500, so even if it needs some stuff, still a great find.

You have a Merc 150, the steering pump and possibly the hoses would be a great addition to your Arima. All you have to reconcile is whether the steering cylinder will work for your larger Merc.

The helm steering pump and the hoses are universal. They'll fit any boat that the hose length is appropriate for.

The outboard steering cylinder is specific to an outboard brand, size, and year. Research it and use the info to advertise it if you decide to sell.

If you decide to sell the steering pump, I'd be interested as my Baystar version is marginal for my Honda 115hp.

Do you have photos that do not crop out the ends of the cylinder? Likewise, do you gave good photos of the helm?

Tom C

HC5345 is the most common version of the SeaStar front mount cylinder, and yes it will fit the Mercury. Can't tell from the photos which version it is, ORB being the latest, but the fittings are oriented in the correct direction at any rate.

There appears to be some missing hardware. Is there a bag of loose parts in the box?

Thanks guys, GOOD to know!

Here's what's in that bin that relates to this.  I'm still shuffling stuff around in the garage.  I knocked over that jar of watery gear oil from when I did the lower leg.  Couldn't find the lid so I set the jar somewhere where it would be safe until I could find the lid....  Completely forgot about the jar and bumped it with a tarp I tossed up on the shelf!  🤬 what a mess 🤣.

There was another bin with bits and pieces.  Like old steering wheels and crap that I had no use for.  It went with that old boat.  I'm starting to think I should have delved deeper before I set that free! 😂

I thought you sold your Arima Danno?

Quite a mixed bag of parts.

I see two helms, two sets of hoses, and most, but not all, of one cylinder, plus several very expensive tie bars.

Bonus: Emergency bilge pump handle.

Value of the parts, to you, or someone else, depends, as always, on condition.

If you want to make something of all this (I would) you should start by simply cleaning it all up.

For starters, the hoses should be disconnected from that one helm, drained, blown with compressed air, then coiled as the other pair are. You should wipe down the outsides of the hoses and scrutinize them for kinks, nick, or splits. Also note their lengths and tag them as such.

The loose helm is a standard 1.7 cu. in. surface mount. It would work fine in any Arima, especially with a back-mount kit to reduce the projection. It has an adapter on the shaft, probably seized there. See if you can work it off. The bent studs can be straightened pretty easy, but do not over bend them. They can also be replaced fairly easily.

I can't make out what the other helm is.

If you had to replace any of those long tie bars, it would be hundreds of dollars each. Whether these ones are worth anything again depends on the wear on the ball joints.

The cylinder is missing the mounting arms (horns) and the support rod, as well as the mounting hardware kit. You can replace all those, but it can get expensive. Examine the rod in the cylinder to see if there is any pitting or nicks. Only if it is perfectly smooth would you bother to invest in it.

Tom, WHAT?  $475 for a 25 1/2" little bar?  How much extra for shipping, I wonder.  Whoever goes for this might want to contact me. You see...I just took possession of a bridge that crosses the Hudson River in N.Y. and can let it go real cheap.

Holy Defecation! Those tie rods are a small fortune! 😳

Thanks for the input everyone, I really do appreciate it.  It all went back into the bin for now.  I haven't cleaned out the garage in a ridiculously long time (+/- 5 years).  The sorting, purging, organizing... it takes a while.  For now, I'll hang onto it and look at assembling a steering system later on.

I have someone coming for the old 50HP mercury tomorrow    I posted it pretty cheap to just get it out of my way.

Found another box from that old project boat.  I thought it went with that boat but it appears it didn't (again, the garage has been a safety hazard for years... who knows what else I'm going to find, 😂).  Unfortunately, no additional parts for the hydraulic steering system but it has all kinds of other bits and bobs inside.

Yes, but that's not the compass part number, it's the cardboard box part number.

There's a little bit of crazing on the top of the globe.  Looks like it's an F82 based on the sticker.
