I fished on Feral on Saturday and the captain decided to run NW and we did pretty well - I see you saw Laurence's report on BD, Greg. I'm curious where you ended up on Friday? I know a few people who went SW Friday and Saturday and had 30+ fish days. Maybe they were further west than you.

Yep SW, I talked to 6 or 7 boat CPT in the parking area and went with the consensus rather than WNW Kim recommended.

We started 46 35 just N of Guide Cyn and went as far W as 125 08.  The charters I talked to were further S and W.

Fished nearly 8 hours.  Caught 2 ( two ) low teen Tuna.  Temps were 60-63, color wasn't bright blue but mixed water has been productive

27"  Still a battle to get it in the boat

Late post for me. I went out with Capt. Nick Clayton with All Rivers on the 30th.

Fly fishing for tuna! We ended up with 15 on the boat on what was a weird kinda day. We consistently got fish on the troll but lost several fish. And once lost they remaining school booked it. We did end up with some high quality 20-25 lbers though which were a hoot on the fly rod. The Fish ended up moving really fast the whole day where we would hook up start fighting the fish but the school would move off about 100 yards or so just after we killed the motor, so that limited our ability to plug the boat.

Favorite part was my buddy and I both getting bit at the same time, each of us fighting the fish for 10 secs each, both loosing the fish, and stripping our flies back got hammered on the slide. You can see how corked a 12 wt fly rod gets with these fish.

Correct, I have also heard reports of a couple showing up in Westport and Illwaco. I don't think its a pack your Mahi Mahi gear trip but always fun fishing in the ocean when you never know what your going to catch.

Boats fishing out of Bandon north to the Columbia are getting into dorado regularly.  Have heard a couple of stories of really large fish hooked and fought for 1-2 hours and lost.  Marlin sightings too.  There's fish everywhere and I only get the weekends free to get after them.

A guy that fishes with me some had a friend catch a 12lb Mahi out of Westport yesterday.  There's been a few yellowfin caught lately.
Fort Bragg sounds wild lately with the various fish being caught.

Is LaPush too far north?

Looks like the further south the better, and less distance into the drink...?

Perhaps it's time to load up the camper and spend a few days on the coast.

They've caught a fair amount of tuna out of LaPush.  I read somewhere earlier this year a large Opah was caught from a boat running out o LaPush.  There has been good tuna fishing off of Vancouver this year also.

How about a report for the guys that will be going soon.  Such as area, what was working et cetera.  I'm sure Greg and the guys going tomorrow would appreciate it.

Wish I had a fresh one to share. My tuna season is probably done unless someone invites me.

I was hoping to make one or two more tuna trips with my boat but....someone boinked my boat at the dock the other day.  I guess he was on the other float over from mine.  His fishing partner didn't know much to tie the boat up but was holding it.  Skipper got off the boat to assist, hit the throttle in reverse, boat started to back away from the dock, he tried to get back aboard, and was hanging by the rail.  By the time he hit me he was swimming.  My boat got smacked hard enough to bust the spring line jamming the bow into the dock.  Fairly deep scratch and other gel coat damage to the bow...all in the bottom paint area.  Saturday evening I had gone down to the docks to see if Greg was in from his tuna trip.  After talking with him I went over to check on my boat discovering it with the broken spring line and the bow hanging over the dock plus it was grinding into the dock.  Had me confused as the lines are fairly new.  Installed a new line and went home kind of disappointed about the bow damage.  Monday morning I got a call from the port office just as we were heading out the door for Olympia as my wife had an appointment for a biopsy.  They told me my boat had been hit by another.  Checked the boat Tuesday morning.  Spotted a small chunk taken out of the gel coat on the stern corner.  Damn.  I then jumped on the swim step to check the rest of the stern.  It was springy...oh, oh.  Some screws holding the brackets were pulled free.  Damn.  Pulled the boat out of the water that afternoon.  Some scratching in the gel coat below the swimstep.  Trim tab and outdrive looked untouched.  Two of the four brackets to the swim step are bent with a couple screws pulled out...damn.

Best thing about the whole deal was the skipper wasn't hurt.  Lucky he ended up swimming instead of getting crushed or chopped by his propellor.  It's also lucky his boat got wedged against the piling, my boat and the commercial boat next to me versus wandering around banging into other boats.  He sounds like a nice guy, very upfront about it, had notified the Port and also already had insurance set up so good on him.  It was also probably lucky my spring line broke as the give more than likely softened the blow on the swim step.  As much as you don't want things to happen....shit happens once in awhile.  Just have to roll with it and move forward....but it's a bummer.

I'm still waiting on a second reply from his insurance company as they requested pictures et cetera.  Progressive.
Repairs are the cosmetic damage in the gel coat.  Swim step will be a bit of a different animal.  Farallon said I shouldn't use the existing screw holes.  I was thinking by filling with epoxy they could be reused...nope not a strong enough hold.  Best to use fresh fiberglass.  I think I'll force the insurance to replace all the brackets versus trying to bend the two back into shape, maybe go with something with a bit more beef plus if I can pull it off thru-bolt.  I haven't measured yet to see where thru-bolting would land on the inside.  I'm not sure if the other two brackets are tweaked.

Anyway I can't go back out tuna fishing as I'd probably end up tearing the bracket off on a sea.  From what I hear it was hot fishing today out there....damn.

Sorry Kimbrey, I want to say good to you for your attitude. Yes a bummer for sure for all involved. But how you handle it makes all the difference.  :flagwave:
I know little about Farallon. Are they close by and would it be worth while to have them fix. I know the boat is pretty new.
Hoping for positive results.

I'd do that but they're really busy right now, swamped with new orders and they're in Sacramento while I'm in Washington.  It took me two days of have nervous towing after I picked it up new from them.  I don't think the repair is huge...just a pain in the butt.  I used it hard this past summer, got a few tuna trips in, lots of salmon so it's been a good boating/fishing summer for me but....I wanted to do more.  A friend that has been tuna fishing with me will probably want to go out of his boat, a Parker but it's more fun trying to dial mine in.  He likes the tuna gig on mine versus his Parker especially the fuel burn.

Got it. one more thing, since it is such a new boat and an expensive one. His insurance should cover the transportation to the factory and back plus the actual repair. I know that would put an end to the season. But would ensure the repair is done right and get you on track for next season.

I understand if the repairs are minor enough that this is not practical. Good luck on a good resolution.

That's a good point. Season-ending repairs, get them right.
