Hi guys,

Need to extend the power cable to the panther and am not sure how to find the connector in the image below. Does anybody know what to call this connector and maybe where to find more...they seem fairly common. Thanks. Ed

I am pretty sure you could find that plug at any auto part stores, they are fairly common. Now if you wanted a "marine" version, I dunno.  :shrug9:

Will give it a go. Thanks. Might shrink-wrap it to keep some of the nasty out...

If you are going to use that connector you better buy a bunch extra. They will last about a week in saltwater. :stirthepot: Maybe 2 if you dialectic grease it and shrink wrap it.

West Marine carries a version of that plug w/ tinned wire.  The automotive versions are probably not up to snuff.

http://www.westmarine.com/buy/cole-hersee--flat-wire-connectors--P009_275_007_005

It is a standard, inexpensive plug for battery chargers/electric trolling motors/etc...  As long as it isn't submerged or constantly exposed to spray, it should last quite a while.  Apply dielectric grease to the exposed metal bits, and use adhesive-lined heat shrink connectors for the rest.

Go to NAPA and buy the watertight connector just like your car or boat motor uses (the actual name excapes me at the moment).  They will work great for your needs.

This type of connector has been discussed in the past...
IMO, those connectors should be considered as temporary use at best in any wet/salt water environment... The are called 'weatherproof' which is very different than 'waterproof' so if you're planing on leaving something connected, hanging off the back of your boat that won't really be removed, I'd use the WeatherPak connectors.

http://www.weatherpack.com

They're only slightly more money and when made up correctly, completely waterproof and easy to disconnect/reconnect. They must be 'frugal' as even Russ has started using them!!!

Can't help you out on that part of it as there isn't any NAPA stores around here. They are available here in several ship chandlers/marine suppliers and also wholesaler auto part jobbers.
Russ sourced his online I believe and he might have even picked up the 'pig tail' version so as to only need to make butt spliced crimps instead of the two part (or special crimp tool) connections.

Rick, is this the kit you have? And is this a reasonable price?

Yup, that's the kit! (but that's about $60 more than I paid... wholesale!) $196 Cdn!
It's more than anyone ever needs though (unless it JDooDadd doing dozens of boats!)

I stopped by my local NAPA with this thread on my phone.  It took them a long time to recognize what they were and then they just had some of the parts.

Thought I would be able to just walk in and pick them up....  PITA.

I guess I will order online.

It looks like the crimping tool is about $100 by itself. And I would expect that the cheap versions perform poorly. So I suppose the way to go for "one" boat is to by the tool and order connectors as needed?

I really like the idea of these connectors on pretty much all my low draw equipment. Especially bilge pumps. I could even see a backup pump wired and ready to drop in[emoji14]

Having additional (spare/emergency?)  bilge pumps ready to go is a great reason to use these connectors.

Yes, the 'pro' crimp tool is pricey... but not necessary to make a good crimp. You can use a good ratchet crimp tool (not them $hitty 'indent' multi crimp type!!!) and then a pair of needle nose to GENTLY crimp the silicone stopper.  TaDaa, you're a hero!
Russ did it, you can too!
