2 HDS's on a network. Can I/ how do I share waypoints?
« on: April 12, 2015, 07:03:08 AM »
I installed a second HDS (HDS 9 touch), my original is a HDS7 gen2. My new is HDS is going to be used for the navigating. Is it possible to access the waypoints in the HDS7 thru the network? Or do I have to send them to the new HDS? Is it possible to send/share waypoints?
Thanks,
Shawn

Get the ethernet cable to connect them. That way you can share mapping and sonar between them.

As for the waypoints, I'm not sure if waypoint sharing is done through NMEA2000 or Ethernet. Whatever network does it, they will automatically sync waypoints. Whatever is on the 7 will show up on the 9 when you power it on (if it is connected). After that whatever you add or delete on one will be added to  or deleted from the other.

Or if they need Ethernet for waypoint sharing and you don't have an open port, you can do it manually. Save the waypoints that are on the 7 to a SD card. Then put the SD card in the 9 an upload them.

As soon you are connecting both by ethernet they will share all the waypoints

Because you are running a gen3 and a gen 2 you can share youre Navionics map on both.

That's interesting, i thought you would only be able to share map "data" between the two and 1 map chip per mfd to view the actual charts ?

I just looked this up and yes if you have a HDS Gen2 with at least 2.0 software, HDS Touch or a Simrad it WILL share mapping across the network, common knowledge i just didn't realize until now, i had read that you couldn't but that must have been gen1,   makes sense ( who wants to pay twice for the same map anyway ? )

Thanks Wally

I'll be hooking my 2 HDS-7's together soon too.
I'll also need to order the Ethernet cable.

Shawn...let me know where you find it and the price if you would...PLEASE

The original HDS series could not share mapping. The later generations have full chart sharing, so you only need one chart card in the system. Pretty nice! With only one SD card you can display the "regular" chart on one screeen and have the high res Fish n' Chip display on the other. It's all software, so Lowrance  could do a software update for the gen 1s to enable it. But that ain't gonna happen.

Terry,
I just bought a 6' cable for $31, free shipping, no tax off Ebay.  You may be able to find cheaper, but I like Ebay. Most shippers ship real fast because they know their rating depends on it.

Thanks Shawn..

Alan..

So you're saying that my HDS-7 GEN 1 will not share data with my HDS-7 GEN 2?

Won't share the Navionics map

That's ok...I really don't need it to anyway.
If I want it that badly I can always just shuffle the card to the other machine (but that would only be in event of one breaking down for some reason).

Shawn, you got that new fancy display set up so, now you need to add that G4 broadband radar to complete the package.

I hoping to find me a deal on one from someone doing an upgrade.
