I got an Airmar B258 1 kw thru hull transducer. Who's done a thru hull?

In a matter of about 1.5 hours, I left a message for the seller of an Airmar B258 1 kw thru hull transducer, he returned my call, I Paypal'd money, Croaker Stroker picked it up and dropped it off at an authorized UPS shipping place. He sent me pics, but with no reference to size, I had not idea how big it was.

Yup, it's a monster  So does anyone have any experience with thru hulls? Any knowledge you want to pass along?
Does anyone know the dead rise angle of the hull near the transom? I have to cut the faring to the angle of the hull so that the transducer sits plum.

PS, Thanks again Croaker!

That thing is HUGE...!
No need to worry about the wind pushing you sideways on a slow troll or while on a Hali drift either... It's like a sailboat centreboard!
I think Croaker needs to come up and give you a hand mounting it too...!!!

I'm sticking with my P66 transom mount... for now!

This transducer is 26 times more sensitive than the P66. Like Croaker said, I should be able to spot plankton with this thing! :bigshock:

I thought from the pics online that those things were the size of a big cigar... guess I was pretty wrong about that!
What a whopper!
Most recent drill through that I know of was Alan, aka DSCS.  He had something probably as large as your brass part but it was sticking up from the giant hole in the hull into the fish box.
It was just a month or so ago, so should be easy to find- I think I posted the story.
Alan did an amazing job prepping everything and thinking through each and every step of the process so we didn't even have to get up to get a paper towel!

I think I finally figured it out.  In Shawn's picture, the fairing is up-side down.  The flare goes on the inside of the boat.

I was trying to figure out where he could mount it without the vertical & wire extending above the deck as shown.

That is going to take one heck of a hole.  Where are you thinking about mounting it Shawn?

Don't know what happened to the search function here. When I was getting ready to buy my tilted element I got a lot of hits when I searched on "deadrise"... now nothing   :shrug9:.

I think it is 15 degrees. I know I got the 12 degree tilted element. Easy enough to cipher it out if you can't find it. Or give the factory a call.

Yes, it is sitting upside down in the faring. Keep in mind, after I cut the faring to the angle of the deadrise, it won't be 5" anymore.

Gettin' senile  :hoboy:. Forgot about the Gemeco App. If you or a buddy have an iPhone get the app here.

Then just level the boat on the trailer and you can find your deadrise. Lots of other good stuff on the app. Check it out.

Easy with the implications for ciphering there Alan.  Remember it is Shawn we are helping here.....

croaker stroker

Isn't this how it's done ...?

The hole you drill is only the size of the transducer shaft (about 1")  You cut the fairing in two with a band saw.  Half of the fairing goes on the inside, half goes on the outside.  Easy peasy.   :anyone:

Yup, I had already found that Croaker, thanks! You're right, it shouldn't be too difficult. Bruce2fish has a band saw, I am going over Saturday to cut the faring.

Also could use /o
SC16 Yamaha 4s 90
SP17 Honda 4s 90  - Croaker made me do it. :)

This is getting easier and easier.  One small simple hole with the fairing making a sandwich.  The hull is the filling.

Heck even Shawn should be able to do it.

I am even thinking about offering odds of him getting it right....  Any takers??   :shrug9:  Say for at least  :twocents:

Make your offers ::: odds that he will get it right/messing it up.....  and how many beers you are willing to put up....

Shawn, did you find the installation instruction for the high speed fairing?    Looks like the one link in this discussion is for no or standard fairing.  I noticed a caution about adding a bolt for an anti-rotation device.  It also makes me wonder if there is any othe variation in the cross section detail for installation.    Just some thoughts.

wedocq

From what I can find Bruce, the high performance fairing installation is the same. It's just a little more elongated and water dynamic.

Ishan,
The installation guide is exactly what Streamfixer said. Cut the fairing in half (long ways). The transducer sits in the bottom half on the outside of the boat, the shaft goes up thru the hull, the top half of the cut fairing sits inside of the hull and acts as a backing plate, and the nut on the fairing holds everything together. There is an extra bolt that's installed to keep fairing from rotating. Lot's of 5200 in between.
