Best Navionics chip for Vancouver Island???
« on: March 09, 2011, 09:34:24 AM »
Starting to plan for the summer vacation, and I have a question for folks who fish the west coast of Vancouver Island...

I have a Lowrance HDS chartplotter, which has decent Nautic Insight saltwater maps for the lower 48 states including Puget Sound and the Straight, and a Navionics Platinum chip for the OR/CA coasts and Columbia River.  Neither covers Ucluelet/Tofino, so I am debating whether to invest in the Navionics Platinum chip for Vancouver Island and Puget Sound ($200), buy a used Gold chip ($50), or something else.  Do they make a Fish n Chips chart for Vancouver Island?

Thoughts/experiences/suggestions???

I would say that the Gold chip will do just fine for you, it does not take advantage of some of the features of the HDS system, but chart detail is good.

Use the money you save to get some seasonally appropriate gear for that area - read: BIG spoons and Tomic plugs, and get ready to hang on!!!

Used... there are a couple folks in the PDX area who swapped over to Garmin electronics are now trying to sell their Navionics chips.
