A couple years ago I was asked by the Dallas High School to teach a week long class on how to navigate by gps, and how gps works.

I made this attached map as an instructional aid.

The map shows the difference in distance traveling from east to west vs north to south because the ocean is round.

I keep this map next to me in my boat.

When I hear the coast guard call out a request for assistance I can compare my location and determine my distance to the emergency by using my map.

I'm not good enough to do the map in my head.

I hope this can help someone else.
