The Yamaha F70 and the Mercury are 4 cylinder the Honda and Suzuki 60's are 3 cylinder engines.  IMO the Yamaha F70 is the "Cat's Pajamas" on the 1511 hull.
Thanks for reminder that the Yamaha is a 4-cylinder vs a 3. The 4-cylinder should idle smoother while at trolling speeds, with less vibration.

I gotta agree with COB that the Yamaha F70 is the "best" overall motor on a 16. The Yamaha F70 has the best power to weight ratio, as well as 4-cylinders.

That said, I have no problems with my Honda, and am a firm believer in Honda motors.

When we went to sekiu this fall we had 4 guys in the 16 sea chaser.  Was probably a total of 1k of dude plus 2 small yetis, a couple bags of ice and all our fishing gear.  We topped out at 9 knots and were plowing something firece.  Pretty sure we fouled plugs we replaced the day before lugging it down so much:)

Hunter;  Don't worry.   270 isn't so bad.....especially when you consider it's "all muscle".  I mean.......they say muscle is heavier than fat........right?  Plus.....your very tall........aren't you?

Have fun,  Yat    :jester:

I have started calling around. Some interesting stuff.

Performance marine suggested the Suzuki df60av.  Sportcraft suggested the standard gear honda/suzuki.  They certainly have nice pricing plus tax savings.

Talked to 3 rivers up here as well and they have the Yamaha f70 in stock.  The price is almost the same as performance is quoting for the zuke 60av which we would have no reason to go Suzuki 60 if it is the same price as the f70.

I reached out to Ps marine in Portland. Has anybody dealt with them before and knw if they are competant?

If you are strongly considering the F70, and at a good price, I wouldn't wait too long. I remember someone mentioned that they were hard to come by right now.

Don't forget the rigging costs as well.

Check with U.S. Marine Sales and Service in Olympia on F70. They had some pretty good pricing last year when I was looking.

:yeahthat: X2

If your leaning towards the F70 and from what Fisher wrote, first I would jump on it now before the new year since the projections are showing all the major brands will be increasing in costs due to the higher then normal demands. Second there will be no second thoughts if you made the right choice on a repower and you'll be happier.

Regarding the DF60Av and the way I look a it is, it has great thrust to get you out of many different situations and will give you solid control every time. It is not going to win any speed contests or keep up with the Yamaha F70, maybe get close to the Honda where you can read the HIN numbers, but it will be the slower of the motors. This motor was design not necessarily for runabout boats, but for pontoons and house boats to easily push them with zero issues.

If you want more speed and not break the bank, the DF60A is another choice and from what I have read on the Suzuki forums, guys are getting between 32 and 35 mph at 6100 on their runabout boats.

My favorite motor would be either the Honda 70 (or 80) HP 60 degree V4.   Ooops!.......Sorry........I forgot........they don't make it. Ha   I have an old saying; it goes like this:  "Just because you have the ability to build something, doesn't necessarily mean you know 'what' to build."  Ha   BTW, if they ever build such a thing, it should be "square" motor.....meaning bore and stroke of equal dimension.

A few prop suggestions from actual members with an F70 on a 16........

13.25x-13, 4-blade Solas Amita.....about $100

13x13, 3-blade, PowerTech SS SCD-3.......$300+
Same prop that COB posted earlier.

It's also crucial to get the motor mounting height correct.

Thank AJ

So next questions.  I can get a free hds7 gen2 touch.  Will that work with the f70 to display engine data? Thinking we might be able to save a few bucks if we can use that instead of a tach. Maybe we want the tach as well though?

I didn't think about it but does the f70 have the troll mode feature or is that something we have to add?

The HDS will work for engine data if you setup a NMEA 2000 network.   I would get the digital Yamaha gauge, no experience with the troll mode function.

AJFishin

I think Yamaha does have a version of "troll control", you might want to double check though.

Also double check to make sure if you DO NOT get a tach, that it doesn't void your warranty. The reason for this is, with Suzuki if you do not have the tach, then you don't get your warnings, thus voiding your warranty.

Another thing, ask the dealer if they're giving you the $500 dealer credit and ask if they can get you the extended 5 year warranty, instead of the 3 years I believe Yamaha offers on under 90HP models. You got squeeze everything out that you can.

They want quite a bit to install a display and hookup the nmea/Yamaha interface.  Looks like if we go that route we will be doing it ourselves.

30 mph with my BF60. 11.1X14 3 blade aluminum.
That is on a 15 sea hunter?  Do you have bottom paint?  Fresh or saltwater?
Yes a 15' Sea Hunter. No bottom paint. Both salt and fresh water.

Best I can tell from other threads we will want to mount using the top hole?

I have read a ton of the older threads on props.  Sounds like that power tech scd3 really is the best all around prop.  A bit spendy.  I like the idea of the Solas 4 blade for normal usage although I am somewhat concerned of the low end power getting on plane.  I wonder if 3 rivers Wil be willing to match a prop that isn't a "Yamaha" prop? If we do have to stick with a Yamaha it sounds like we may want to go with the 13 5/8 x 13 and be careful not to over Rev or go with the 13x15p and have a crappy holes hot.  Wonder if we can detune a 15p to 14?

The F70, IIRC, will rev to 6300rpm. It also should have a rev limiter.

Ask COB or JChaser which hole they have their F70 mounted on. Maybe they could provide a picture.

Top hole, I think a 13 pitch will hit the rev limiter (I know from experience that it has one 6400).

AJFishin

Best thing I did was call Power Tech and talked with one of their reps, which seemed very honest, and helped me a lot and suggested I get my prop detuned because he didn't want to sell me one of their expensive props for very little or no gain.

Also try giving a prop shop a call and see what they say about detuning a prop of your choice.

I have a Powertech SS SCD-3, 13x14. Custom ordered in a 14 pitch. I may be willing to part with it. It is in excellent condition. Not sure if it will fit the F70?
