HI All,
I just got a call from Big Salmon letting me know the tribe has decided to "shut the rez down" until 4/15.  They hope to open for the ling season, but it obviously depends on how the situation is later down the road.

PS - which one of you has all the TP!?!!   :anyone:

Not sure, but it must be the Treaty of Neah Bay that still gives the Makah the right to do that?  Can't blame 'em though, considering what's going on with this virus.  I read there were only something like 1200 or so members of this Tribe.  Pretty small community.

Hey........."Makah"..............Great name for my new little Zenith 4.0 Fisher.  I like it!  "The boat that can take-on Neah Bay just like the Tribe's little cedar canoes once did."  Haha

headduck:  Man....I guess!  I did a short search on that Tribe this morning.   Quite a history behind those people and their way of life.  Some absolutely beautiful (albeit rugged) country up there.  Funny, but I was always under the impression it would take some kind of huge boat to fish some of those areas.  After seeing guys (only a couple of years ago) landing Halibut in little plastic kayaks.....I'm thinking differently.  I'm sure that ocean has its "moments", but most of the conditions I've seen in these videos haven't really appeared all that bad.

20 years ago, the Makaw's  slaughtered 30-foot juvenile gray whale after repeatedly wounding and torturing the animal with steel harpoons, they finally finished it off with a .50-caliber armor-piercing assault rifle.  The canoe was a ceremony thing.   After the dead whale sunk, they used a motorized fishing boat to retrieve it from the bottom, then hauled it to shore where they handed out some whale meat to celebrate their bravery and then went home and left the majority of it to rot.

Oooh, Hunter.........Not a good story.   Me no like!  There's no need for that in this day and age.  Maybe I'll name my new little boat something else.

A political expression to uphold their treaty 'rights'.  Yes a waste, but they apparently thought it was necessary.

Of course there was no mention in the papers of the amount of animal waste involved.  I suspect they speak of that similar to how they discuss, with a chuckle, long lining the halibut banks until 3 or 4 days before the sportsman season season opens for halibut.

Not a new approach between the tribe(s) and the white man.

Along those same lines, the 'ancient' treaty hunting and fishing rights are exercised in the Columbia and Klamath marshes, except today those treaty rights are exercised by tribes from across the nation, using high powered rifles, spot lights, powered boats, and gill nets.  On the other hand, fishing sights, such as Celilo Falls, have been submerged by BPA dams...

Not a pleasant issue to try to equitable resolve.  And I sure as hell don't have any answers, much less the right ones.

:yeahthat: Between that and the tribes not being held responsible for providing catch records and them over-fishing the waters it definitely puts a sour taste in my mouth towards them.  As such, I won't "support them" by going to any casino's and giving them my money.

An awful lot of money changes hands with the May 1 halibut opener!  Between the dock fees, launch fees, tackle store, grocery store, campground and gas sales, the dollars really add up!  They'll feel this one...

I was there when they harvested the whale. I never saw any rot. The only people who were acting like savage idiots were the green peace idiots in boats trying to blockade the harbor. the US coast guard had to intervene in my circumstance when a zealot in a 21 foot boat thought it would be a good idea to ram my 15 whaler to keep me from leaving port to go salmon fishing. Last I saw was his boat being towed with him in handcuffs never forget the look on his face when I removed him forcibly from his boat and put him in water with a hip role. I got invited to the tribes potlatch later that weekend cant say that whale tasted good but I tried it. An Elder that I talked with who was alive when they hunted them for subsistence said they fed the greys to the dogs after rendering lard for fuel that the eating whales were the humpbacks. It was an interesting time would be nice if we kept the facts straight they are a proud nation and deserve the truth.

A young guy working at Big Salmon told me about the activists (GP).  He said they caused a lot of trouble.  He saw that I was interested in the Makah Tribe and offered to show me around the res.  It was an interesting and informative time.  He was also going to show me around the museum, but couldn't arrange the time.  I went anyway and recommend it.

I was there with my best friend and a nephew they had the Sea  Sheppard ship and were running all kinds off runabouts with all these privileged white kids racing around waving flags yelling the most profane language getting in peoples faces.
I was not interested in listening to their perspective therefore  they chose to confront me. It didn't work out well for them. The coast guard was treating them like the terrorist they were acting like.

Got an email from The Cape Resort rescheduling my reservation to start May 15 due to the shelter in  place order by the Makah Tribe until that time.
I made several  calls to Big Salmon to find out what they were going to do about moorage fees paid prior to May 15th, but was unable to speak with anyone or leave a message (their mailbox was full).
I figure just wait and see, but would be interested to hear if anyone has heard anything about this.
