« on: July 01, 2019, 07:42:39 AM »
I’ll be launching out of Newport for 3 days of Halibut starting on the 4th. Usually do well out there.  If anyone would like to give and receive radio reports let me know.  Let me know your vessel name   Mine is The Patriot.

Anyone venturing out on big blue this week please be careful of the extreme morning ebb tides that could make the bar crossings a bit dicey.  I'm looking at Garibaldi options on the 5th but the -1.6' tide could be a challenge.

Anyone venturing out on big blue this week please be careful of the extreme morning ebb tides that could make the bar crossings a bit dicey.  I'm looking at Garibaldi options on the 5th but the -1.6' tide could be a challenge.

I was looking at the weather on Friday and it looks to be a super nice day with light winds. With regard to that crossing and seeing that the -1.6 is at 9:30am, would crossing a few hours prior be a viable option (thinking like 6:30/7 when it's still ~+2)? Or does the dicey part involve the incoming after the negative low tide?

Regardless, I would only consider it if I can get an experienced deck hand on board to walk me through that crossing for the first time.

Crossing a couple of hours earlier you'd likely encounter worse conditions given the water flow at that time would be greater so meeting the incoming ocean swells and making the water like a giant washing machine right over that now shallow bar.  With such a big exchange of water it's hard to tell when it will slow down.  The tide tables say 9:30 but the reality is that the water might still be moving out even after the time on the tide charts.  What will be in your favor from 9 on is the flow should(key word!) be lower so conditions, if bad, should be getting better by that time.  If the ocean is as smooth as it was last saturday, it might just be fine.  But you never know.  Once the ebb stops and the tide starts to flow back in the bay the conditions should be workable.  Quick call to Coast Guard for a bar report will tell you whether you are crossing.

Sounds like a good Arima buddy boat is in order. Surely there will be lots of Arima's headed out this week.

I plan to be putting in at Garibaldi on Friday.  Either Garibaldi or Hammond on Sunday.

I just talked to a friend who's down in Garibaldi through mid-month, I'll fish on his boat Saturday. Rockfish, lings and nearshore coho have been slow, but the guys fishing the CR buoy are getting lights out days. Hammond sounds like the place to be if you're after salmon (realizing full well that this is a thread about Newport Halibut;)

Awesome 3 days Halibut fishing out of Newport.  Easy limits Thursday and Friday but only one on Sat.  All nice fish near or above 40inch.

Have to love the Newport bar.  No problems even on the negative tides.

Very nice fish you got, there's some good fillets there. Newport is a great little city, I always enjoyed going up there when I lived in the ghost town Waldport.

Todd,
Great meeting you as well.  I'm planning to fish Saturday next week.  Thinking about Sunday but might have to get a few things done around the house.
