Thinking about a radar dome , would be using the humminbird unit   Pretty sure it's less than 20lbs  has anyone mounted radar on their Bimini/factory soft top without a radar arch?

I got a pair of discovery bay brackets and had a pole fabbed with plate on top.

In retrospect, I would do it the same but place it in a better location so it could also support a puller davit. I placed it at the step as that was the only location where the inner gunwhale provided a straight shot down. Should have made some starboard spacer blocks and went with a more standard location.

I have seen others mount a tri pod on the bow. I wanted to get high enough to avoid direct microwaves to my dome from the dome...maybe not a big deal but felt if I could avoid it I would do so...

Sorry, but I don't have a photo of the radar pole.

You can see the pole in the porpoise photo stored on the lower right in the open bow. If you zoom in, you can see the mounting bracket I made from Starboard. I used a piece of a sailboat mast for a pole and a Table bracket on the ends with Starboard adapter. All made from marine surplus.

That is pretty slick! I'll have to look and see if there is a feasible spot on my sea explorer   I'm still leaning toward Bimini mounted if I can find someone who has already done it with no issues

You will find that most have installed an arch to mount their radar dome above their soft top.  They also incorporate rod holder with arch.

I don't think a bimini will support the weight.

I have a rod holder incorporated into my top, and the frame is all 7/8 stainless, and stainless mounts. I don't think supporting the 20 lbs is a problem, but the mounting might be tricky

Digging this thread up from its grave to make a point that wasn't mentioned. 20 lbs at rest is not the same as 20 lbs in stop and go, up and down motion (i.e. when you're pounding and slapping through rough water). Isaac Newton taught me this.

If I had a ragtop I'd go with the arch like in Dev Mah's pic.

The arch was preferable. The mast was affordable. The arch can also hold poles, nets, and whatever else you want out of the way.

I imagine you could mount on a softop but would be scared to move or be rocked in anything more than 1ft wind waves. The domes are heavier than expected and add a bit of movement and theirs potential trouble.

Expensive, but worth every penny.  Would be difficult to not have a tower on every boat.  It is used as much for something to hold onto as anything, but rod holders are invaluable as well.
