Wood in pre-Defiance Arimas

1) There is a dual thickness of wood in transom separated with glass and resin so even if one were to get moisture, the other one should not.  It does not need to be as thick or as strong as it was since the actual transom is so short being between the sponsons.  (picture a heavy book in the center of a 4' unsupported bookshelf vs the same heavy book in the center of an 8' unsupported bookshelf)

2) The stringers were fiberglass with closed-cell foam so no wood there.

3) Floor - wood cut into pieces (6" x 6" or smaller) and applied to the resin and glass and then covered with resin and glass, including between the pieces of wood.  Should a hole not be sealed properly, the water infiltration will not wick past that one small section.

4) Front deck - same as the floor except that the pieces are closer to being 1.5" x3".

5) There is wood under the gunwales for strength.

If there was no wood in the boat, there would be nothing to attach things to as screws would just pull through.  There is wood glassed behind where the jump seat mounting brackets go.  There is wood glassed into the sponsons so that kicker motor bracket and/or a boarding ladder can be mounted back there.  There is wood where ever we have to screw things in.

The only transom failure, that I am aware of, happened to a 1983 (transom rebuilt in 2014), that the owner(s) had mounted numerous items to, and changed out, over the years.  Their method of sealing screw holes, and through transom mountings, consisted of painting over the transom with house paint. Definitely not an approved method.
