Looking to get a backup marine radio. Portable. Reasonably priced.

Any recommendations? Any brands NOT recommended?

TIA (Russ - that's Thanks In Advance   )

Over the last 20 plus years,  I have had at least 6 Icom radios, VHF marine fixed and handheld, and VHF air  - I have never been disappointed with an Icom product.  :twocents:

This is on my list too. Been wanting to get one. Be sure to look at the charging options so it can be charged on the boat with a 12V socket, as well as at home.

Can't go wrong with either an Icom or Standard Horizon

+2.  When it comes to safety, buy once buy right.

SH HX870 (or 890) includes GPS and DSC.  Doesn't take place of fixed radio but I don't leave port without it.

COB, you need to add Eight O'clock Dark Italian Roast to the mix. :sip:

Peet's Major Dickason's blend is very nice smooth dark roast.

I have the 870, best one I know of in the price range. Floats, good battery life, easy to use, dsc, gps, etc.  Standard Horizon had a $50 rebate going for awhile, not sure if still available

No worries Croaker, these threads sometimes have a life of their own. (Yes, what's up with those emoji's anyway?) (Pile on Danno time ;)

Been looking around online (where else). That Icom Ic M34 does not seem to be available any more. Standard Horizon doesn't seem to review well (at least the ones I've looked at). My son, the kayaker (in the ocean no less), likes the Uniden brand. All those guys have portables. He also was not complimentary of the Standard Horizon brand.

Thanks guys for the replies. Okay-----continue with the EXPENSIVE coffee discussion....................................................

How bout a nice cup of tea 🍵??? As for the radios mentioned, pretty much any of those top brands mentioned would be better than not at all. On my list as well
