I'm going to be doing some cleaning up of the helm, (I mean dash) and I had no problem taking the steering wheel off, but how does the black hub come off?
The hub spins, but feels tight, so I'm not sure exactly how the hub is supposed to come off.

Solved it see below....

What hub are you talking about?  Do you have cable steering or hydraulic?  If it's cable, that's just a bezel to hide the ugly hole and steering shaft.  It may just be pressed on... but it may crack taking it off.

Uh. Oh......ideas......$$$$

Take some pics of the "hub"

Good you were able to pull the wheel off. Mine wouldn't come off. I broke a pulley puller trying. Lesson learned...use a dab of triple-guard grease when replacing your wheel.

I have cables.
I guess it would be more of a bezel then a hub. I figured it would just come right off, but it feels like it's screwed on, but spins :shrug9:

I read a post from 2012 that 3weight wrote, pretty simple and effective.  I put the nut at the top of the threads, tap on it with a mallet and then pull on the wheel. I did that and gave it a couple taps, it slipped right off. For how stuck it was, I was surprised when it came right off.

My idea is more like this $$, as my wife might get upset if I do this $$$$   :jester:

So nothing big, more of doing some rearranging and cleaning up, while adding some small bells and whistles.

AJ;  To avoid doing any damage, perhaps you should see if Chief of the Boat could chime-in on this one.   My 16 SC is a 94, so it is similar, but I've never had it apart.

Salty Dangler

I just replaced my helm, cable, and wheel recently. Once the wheel came off it exposed a couple of bolts holding the bezel in place. Unfortunately, it didn't look anything like your picture so I'm no help there. As far as wheel removal goes... I had a real tough time getting the old wheel off at first. Finally, I sprayed it with PB Blaster (love that stuff) and hit the center post with the heat gun until it started to smoke a bit. I braced myself and gave it a big tug and dang near fell out of the boat. It just popped right off!

Fisherdv

AJ, are you changing out the helm, or switching to hydraulic steering?

From your pic, it looks like you would remove the key, then pry off that keeper.  :shrug9:

I feel so stupid. This is why people say don't do thnigs when you're half asleep.
It was the most basic thing to do to get it off.

I went out and gently put a flathead screwdriver under the cap and walked it around and guess what, it popped off.
There was no srews or anything holding it on, besides just pressure of the cap itself.

Thanks for the help and sorry for being a numbskull  :stooges:

I should say, I'm changing the look of the dash, not the helm, and a little rearrangement. Hydraulic steering is far away in the future

Funny you say that CS. That is what got me thinking. But when I went out and took a look at it, the key and the keeper had nothing to do with it
It just needed to be popped off as it was just really stuck on there.

I used to have a heck of a time getting the steering wheel to release from the shaft.  Problem solved with a wheel or gear puller from Harbor Freight.
