'82 Chaser Bow Anti Scuff plate
« on: January 25, 2018, 11:10:47 AM »
My old battlewagon '82 Chaser, looks like a demolition Derby winner. The hull had so many scrapes up in the bow, that I fiberglassed some heavy, 4" wide stitch mat cloth over the hull, with Epoxy Resin. Then, I ran a layer of 6 oz cloth, and more epoxy resin over that, for about 8 ft from the bow eye, sternward. It will get painted when the rain lets up. I upgraded the inferior bow eye, to a 1/2" diameter one, that was welded to a bow plate. I found this on Great Lakes Skipper. The damn thing fit amazingly to the Arima. I put a layer of West System epoxy with Colloidal silica, and bonding adhesive between hull and plate. Two, 3/8" machine phillips head  bolts were required to cinch it in tightly.
I know, glue on keel savers are available, but i can't afford to buy them on my Social Security income. This Fiberglass keel saver will outlast me, and will not look so shabby after fair and paint. I will prolly do away with the Blue top color, and paint the whole boat, Interlux 2 part Polyurethane, Pearl. Like I did my Skipjack.

The fiberglass keel guard is a good idea. Now you can plow through the flotsam. Although, I think the glass is pretty thick right there anyway. My keel was worn down through the gelcoat. So, after scuffing the glass with 60 grit, I just rolled a thick layer of gelcoat on with a foam roller. I was going to flatten, Color Sand, Polish

........but I didn’t    :jester:

Anyway the gelcoat is pretty tough. Still looks good after a couple of years.

It’s a good thing to inspect your bow eye’s nuts.  My 91’s were just about to give it up when I caught it and replaced it.  This one looks like it will last a looong time!

yes, the inadequate bow eye backing nuts were completely rusted garbage, as well as the "too small for the job", stern eye. Stainless nuts, seemed to not have been used back in '82. Granted, that was 36 years ago. I upgraded the stern eyes, when I installed the incredible Arima Fixed kicker motor mount. You have to just cut them off with a cut-off wheel on the outside. I also beefed up the Stern transom, where many holes were drilled for different Kicker mounts. I ONLY use West System Epoxy for all repairs and modifications.

Nice job- how did you access the stern eyes with everything in the way?  And what length were the eyelets?

I cut a 16" square hole, cleaned out foam for an hour, and epoxied a Fiberglassed backing plate, where the lower holes are. I just can't find a finished picture, with the additional backing plate epoxied in.
