Bodega crabbing
« on: November 06, 2017, 09:50:51 AM »
Pretty successful crab trip this past opening weekend. Saturday ended up having pretty snotty conditions so we ended up leaving our pots down on 10 mile beach Saturday and over night.  It was too sloppy to hang around and let them soak, so we headed back up hill at 5 kts for a bumpy slow ride back with some water being sprayed in our faces. We usually get easy limits down there and normally have to go thru 60 to 80 crab to keep 2 limits of really nice size dungie. Sunday we pulled 37 crabs in 4 pots and 2 other pots were empty hmmmmmmm. As we got within sight 3 very early bird boats high tailed it out of our area. Our neighbor  crabbers that came right after us also had a few empty pots. We have never in years have had an empty pot, so our guess is some peeps helped themselves to our work but we could only keep 30 so not that big of deal. Weather was great for the most of the weekend and Shane my son was with me and Saturday was a good sea sick test and he is fine on the water and looks like my sea sickness of past is all behind me. Great weekend, shelling crab tonight for future soups and crab cakes.

We have never had a problem down there in the past and we make that long trip to avoid 98% of the people, we are also in search of larger crab. I hate to claim thief when we really don't know for sure, but it was odd our pots were empty as our neighbors were. Our neighbor crabber was the only guy to stay Saturday and check his pots and he said in 1 1/2 hours soak Saturday all his pots had good numbers.
Who knows, crab pot raiding does happen but a lot of times I think the pots just could be empty.

I do know crabs sure do like chicken.

I remember years ago at a good salmon Fishing spot from shore, people were stealing stringers of salmon while guys were Fishing.  :hoboy: Anyway, looks like you guys did real well out there

I told a couple of fishing buddies where to put their pots today, they just texted in "30 crab, 30 rock fish and 3 lings" for 3 people - not a bad day of work!   And all done by 1:00 PM.

The boat in background of the picture of the pier was the boat we were using, it is a heavy 23 foot Wellcraft twin etecs. Uses a lot of gas - not my favorite boat.

I did not use the Arima, I helped a friend on his boat.  I have the Arima near home now, not at Lawson's. I would have liked to have had the Arima out in that water Saturday just to see how it would handle, but with that north wind no other type of boat was moving very fast heading up hill. I am looking at my work load and project load so I am uncertain that I can get out again but may try.
