Here is a old post on batteries you can use a deep cycle for starting.

Dev;    I've never run anymore than a single deep cycle Marine/RV battery on my 16 SC.  I keep it charged in my basement over the off season, and trade it in every three years for new.  Knock on wood, I've never had a failure.  That said, reading your old post has convinced me; if I ever add a second battery, it would probably be another rugged deep cycle.  The way you describe the sensitive nature of those thin plate starter batteries, it just seems to make more sense to me......especially since I'm only talking about cranking a 60 HP motor. Just not crazy about (what I call) a "car" battery in a boat.

Dear Arima:  Stretch the Hunter platform by 5. Next, stretch the Explorer by 9 and steal 2 or 3 from the cabin.  Please hurry, I'm getting old.

I have 2 deep cycles on my boat for 4 years now no issues, I have them hooked up to a Marinco smart charger (http://www.marinco.com/en/2707a).

Just remember to over size the CCA by 20% than the required starting CCA.
Just like you I will be pulling them both out and replacing them this year.
