Hi everyone, I'm going to repower my 19 SR. It has a 90 honda 4 stroke which is just under powered. I'm debating between a yamaha 115 and an etec 150 since they are basically the same weight. I know the etec Will be plenty, but I love the reliabilty of yamaha. Is anyone running either of these? Curious if the 115 Is enough? Also have dual batteries, dual electric downriggers, 4 stoke kicker to give an idea of additional weight I'm pushing. Thanks!

I know Foxsea has a 150 Etec on his 21' Explorer. Maybe try and contact him. That boat moves out very well.

I made the same switch you are contemplating late last your. My 19 was set up the same as yours except with radar. Had a Yamaha 115 installed and it made the boat into a completely different boat. I asked about the difference and was told it isn't just HP but that the Yamaha had much more torque.
Recently added trim tabs and told my wife that's it, no more things to add.
What exactly is a keel guard, should I think about more electronics, what about...........
I live near Bremerton, Wa if you want to take it out for a spin.

So you are happy with the 115 then planes and cruised better?

I put a new Yammie 115  on my SR19 in 2012 plus a 9.9 HT Yammie kicker.  The main is amazing for that boat and gets an amazing 5 mpg!

The 115 made it into a much better boat. Very happy with it.   Rifleman

I would consider the Suzuki df115A. Very nice motor! Bruce2fish has it and has been getting 5-7 mpg if I remember right. I know he has been completely happy with that motor!

I would also consider the Suzuki DF140. 410 pounds.

Threeweight

Suzuki DF140.  Best power to weight ratio in a 4 stroke in that class, and a superb motor.

But... why do you think the 90 is under powered?  Have you tried a different prop?  A good 4 blade prop will do wonders for how quickly an Arima planes, and how it handles with a heavy load.  It's a lot cheaper than a new motor!

Try the 4 blade prop. That should save you about 12k.

I also have a F115 on my 19SR Skip with similar accessories as you. I am happy with this setup, love the fuel economy. Would consider a size larger when time comes, however.

If you put a 400 lb motor on the stern you'll appreciate trim tabs, especially when the tank is full!

I would think a 90 would be marginal. I have one on my 17' and would not go that route with a 19 which would be another 500 lbs or so and more hull to push/plane

Think about the 17 & 19 hull designs. Everything from the front end of the gunwale forward and everything from the fish boxes back are the same. The difference is the extra two feet in the dance floor. That is no where near 500#. Maybe 100#.

As far as the 90 on the 19' SR, mine was not doggy at all. While I would not buy 90HP for a 19 SR hull that needed a motor, I certainly would have ever considered the 115HP as a necessary upgrade especially for the $5K to $6K it would cost to put it on there.

The 2 more feet of length provides more planing area and helps the boat get up on plane and rides better.

Not to get into an argument over this however on Defiance website the 17' Chaser is listed at 1250 lbs hull weight and the 19' Sea Ranger at 1650 a difference of 400 lbs. that and a fuel tank that is 21 gallons larger and you will be 500 lbs easily heavier. Anyway yes you can change props however you will lose mph.  :twocents:

Anyone ever try a 135 Honda on a 19 Ranger? Wonder if that would be a good combo?

The honda 135/150 are awesome motors. They are also 500Lbs.  I have a 135 on my 21ht and would swap to a 140 suzuki in 1 second. 100lbs on the transom makes a huge difference.

+1 for the zuki! They run well, get good fuel economy, and are all around nice engines.

I am running a 150etec on my 21. Just let me know if you have any questions about the motor. The 150etec would turn a 19' into a drag racing boat.

I have been running my Suzuki DF115A for four years.   Love it good power and fuel economy.  I went to Barkley Soumd in August.  We put in at Port Alberni and had to run 26 mile to the island we stayed at (can't remember how to spell it, something like Tzaersa or something).   Anyway had a heavy boat, three big guys, 220 to 250 lbs. food, ice, three cases of water.  Clothes sleeping bags, generator, fishing gear including 6 15lbs downrigger balls, halibut gear and weights etc.   on the way back we had 3 coolers full of fully iced fish.
The 115 did not struggle getting on step and on those heavy runs from Port Alberni and back we still were getting 3.2mpg.  Daily fishing with three unloaded we were getting 4.8mpg average.
I think 3wt is right if you look at a 140, it would be the best, but my experience with the 115 on my 19 is very good pairing for the boat.
