I haven't fish there. You may want to study the Navonics charts for the lake. You could at least get a good idea of the structure in the lake. Here is a link. It doesn't show depths but you can see the contours. Good luck.

You can see the depths but not when you are in the SonarChart mode. That's a little circle, bottom of page, left side. That is a deep lake!

I have visited lake Tahoe from NH a few years ago.  We decided to get on a charter and we jigged for lake trout.  Lots of fun along the west side of the lake.  White grub jigs with some bait fish did the trick.  Fish were up to 10 pounds.  Had the fish prepared at a pub at the south end of the lake.  We just gave them the fish and they prepared and cooked them.  It fed all the bar patrons.  The salmon were also spawning in the streams on the our tour of the west part of the lake.  Color phase black bears were fishing for them. :smile1:  Nice place.

25 years ago we put out fish traps by kings beach, caught minnows and used them for bait. Fished all the way around the lake. Got back to kings beach caught 2 mackinaw just before dark and that was it. Good luck, happy fishing

I always wanted to fish there and in years past I noticed the guided trips were priced really fair at the time. The big hurdle is getting your boat cleared thru inspections, from what I understand they are very strict.
Maybe it would be worth a guided trip first then pursue your own chase.

I would hire a guide first then go out just to learn the lake. If the winds kick up it could be nasty getting back to the dock.

I've fished Tahoe many time as our family had a small cabin in Truckee so it was a short haul over to Tahoe City...      Our go to month was late May and our target area was to launch in darkness from Tahoe City and then head straight towards the South Shore casino lights till about the 180 to 190 ft depth marks...   Then follow the contours and troll large J-Plugs for Mac's (Arctic Char).   bouncing right on the bottom......ultra slow   I like white and glow in the dark colors.   Have had 20+ lbr's out of that lake.   Once the sun comes up the bite usually stops and we'd switch over to light tackle and topline for rainbows.

Also have caught some real nice Macs in Donner, also using J Plugs and then out about 8 colors on leadcore.   The key to Donner is  to hit the lake right after a stocking dump at the northwest ramp.   The mac's move closer to the surface to feed on the stockers.

Also some trophy Browns in Tahoe, Donner and Truckee River

Thanks Hunter. I plan to fish out of south lake on one day and will follow your advice. Do you think I can get down that deep with leadcore line and a 3 swivel rig so i can get the bottom at those depths?

I doubt that you can get there with lead-core.    I have also seen folks use braided line or wire line along with a 3-way rig and a 1lb ball....there's about an 8 to 10ft  leader from the 3-way out to the J-Plug and you end up hand lining the fish to the net.   The Macs are pretty quiet on the surface once up from that depth.

Something else to look forward to, was just up there diving last month and if you're bringing your boat make sure the bilge is dry and spotless as well as engine cooling intake as you will have to get it inspected and of course you never used it in salt water. Also if trailering each day they will wire and tag the prop at ramp ( if you ask)so you don't have to go thru the big inspection process again. I think it was $75 for inspection.
Good luck, Willy
