TR1 Gold Help
« on: July 25, 2017, 03:12:39 PM »
My TR1 has been doing some weird stuff and now the remote isn't doing anything when the system is turned on.  Does anyone in the Olympia area have a TR1 that I could try your remote or mine on yours to see if it is bad?

In my experience, such poor behavior is almost always caused by a bad connection.  Recommend cleaning the heck out of all connections.  In particular, the connections that are zip-tied together from the factory.

I would call Garmin they have a great tech support that will help you over the phone even if it's out of warranty.

Garmin thinks it's my ECU, but wants me to see if I can find a dealer or friend that will let my try their remote.  I have tried the local dealers and no one has one in stock.  If anyone has one that would be kind enough to let me try it I would be very grateful before I drop $500 on a new ECU.

FA, I'm using the TR1 and wish I could help you out but I ran my remote to the forward pilot station from the rear sponson when I rewired, in armored conduit with some other sensitive wires secured with 528 zip ties (roughly). No way am I ripping that out!

Is there maybe a local dealer with a remote in the box? Seems like they would want to help, especially if you might need parts.

Hope you get it working soon.

I already have my remote out of my boat.  I'm just looking to plug it into a working system to see if it functions.  I didn't mean to request anyone to uninstall their system.

The closest place that has any parts on hand is Portland Marine and I don't want to tow my boat to them and leave it for an unknown amount of time during peak fishing.

Cheers

Ok, takes a while for old gears to mesh. PM me if you want to come out to Gig Harbor and try it on mine.

Update - I called Garmin tech support again and this time the guy decided to replace my ECU, throttle control and hand held remote.  They are only charging me about half the cost of the ECU and are giving me a new throttle controller and remote under warranty.  Now I explained to them that this gear came with the boat I purchased and I wasn't the original purchaser.  I'm very impressed with how Garmin treats customers and supports their gear.  I have been dealing with Lowrance the last four years and I have never had their tech support go the extra mile to make it right.

Thanks for being willing to help me out guys!

Garmin did the same for me. The cylinder was leaking and the hose connections were different so I had to replace the pump, the new pump wasn't compatible with the ECU so it had to be replace, the throttle cable wasn't compatible with the new ECU so it had to be replace. The hand held device was the only original part on the boat. The new unit cost me $500.00.

I'm glad Garmin has improved the customer experience for TR-1 customers.

Before Garmin owned them, I bought a factory refurbished unit, direct from TR-1. The ECU was bad, out of the box. They wouldn't replace, repair, or take-back the bad unit. My only option was to buy another ECU. The stupid thing never did work correctly, and cost me more than it would have to buy new.

My Tr1 was before Garmin and the supported it even when the throttle control was not compatible.

Results - the new ECU did the same thing as the old one.  The new remote fixed the problems so it is the black box swap winner.
