17 Sea Ranger with 70hp
« on: January 18, 2017, 10:01:43 PM »
I've read up on this here, and find that generally people feel that 70hp on a 17 is underpowered.

However, I've noticed that in 2011, the yamaha F70 lost a lot of weight. Also has high rpm rating of 5300-6300

So to go from a 70-90 now, you would trade 20hp for 110lbs of weight on the transom.

Anyone have experience with one of these lighter 70hps on a 17' boat. Am I making too big of a deal of the weight and HP is way more important?

Seriously considering a 17SR with 70hp...

We had a 2012 Honda 60 on our SH 15.  We were still breaking the motor in but it felt sluggish getting to WOT speed of 27 with two on board.

Greg:

I don't get it.  Although I haven't yet measured it, my new 60 Honda feels like it pushes my 16 SC close to 40.  It literally leaps-up on plane. The old 45 got me to around 30.  Was there something wrong here?  Go figure.

Dear Arima:  Please "square-off" the Hunter transom. Next, stretch the Explorer by 9 and steal 2 or 3 from the cabin.  Please hurry, I'm getting old.

If you are willing to give up top end speed and select a prop that will give you adequate hole shot, I'm sure it will work.  I suspect your fuel economy would be no better than a 90 HP because you will be running the 70hp at higher rpms.  Prop selection will be key.  The problem I see is that the Arima 17SR feels like such a big boat, it is natural to keep adding things.  With 22% less power you will really want to stay on a boat weight control program.  I'm very satisfied with my 100hp Yamaha with 4 blade prop.  I can pull out of the hole even fully loaded with guys and gear.  Not confident I could do that with only 70hp.

While horsepower is nice to know, what you really need to see is the torque curve of that 70hp.  A light, low displacement, 70hp motor likely doesn't have the low-end umph, you would like for a 17' Arima.

If you are serious about the boat, go for a test drive.  Bring a couple of fishing buddies.  Be sure and test it under full fishing load.

Having run the Yamaha F70 on my 1511 Sea Explorer for almost 400 hours I think it would struggle pushing a 17 Sea Ranger.   :twocents:

Thanks for the replies.

Guess I will definitely need a sea trial. Sounds like it would work for certain situations, but I do plan to do the occasional offshore trip. I don't like the idea of being totally bogged down with the added 200 extra lbs of tuna and ice.

Tough part is, I am 4 hours away from the boat, so hate to think of driving 8 hours round trip for nothing...

One thought I also have is, a repower could pencil out better given how new the current motor is, should have good resale value.

Similar to Chief, I have 400 hours on my F70 - Sea Chaser 1511.

Although I love it on mine, I am quite certain it would struggle on a 17'. And I have a 13 pitch prop.....

Driving that distance is a lot cheaper than doing a repower later

The Yamaha 75 is the same cubic inches as the 90.  The 70 is the same block as the 50, the big difference is 16 valve head and gear ratio.  It makes 70 hp @ 5800 the 75 and 90 make their horsepower @ 5500.

Yat..My 70hp four stroke pushes my Sea Chaser 16 just over 30. Your 60 Honda has an amazing amount of low end torque so I bet you do holeshot well. When you get the top end mph you might find it to be closer to 30 than 40.
Check out this link to see real world results for a 70hp four stroke on a 16...

I am happy with my Honda 90 (2010) on my 17SR but would not go less.  With 4 and crab traps it takes work to get up on plane.

Remember the 17 Ranger is the heaviest of the 17 foot line, think it is 300 lbs more than the Chaser. I have a 17 SR with a 90 and glad I did not go less but I did drop power from a 120 two stroke. My  :twocents: would be don't go less than a 90

I have a 90 Honda on my 17 Ranger.  I wouldn't go less and when the time comes to repower would like to go 115..   There are times when loaded in bad weather that the extra power is nice... wouldn't want to power out climbing a wave out of a trough offshore !!
I guess it depends how you use your boat ? short runs on flat water it would PROBABLY be enough...   Costly to upgrade if it isn't.

Thanks for the info guys. Sound like  I'd have to negotiate price to make a repower pencil out.
