Great Day!
« on: July 13, 2016, 09:40:49 PM »
My neighbor, his son and I ran from Whidbey to the San Juans today on a shrimping expedition.  The water was mostly flat and the weather was sunny and warm.  We made the trip to Friday Harbor in less than three hours and the total mileage for the day was 147.
We met up with Vancouver Techie and his girls and we were able to help each other out, have some fun and even had a boat race!!!  Combined we pulled in 6 limits of spot prawns at 160 each person.
After several hours of fun we arrived home and unpacked and hosed down and now will enjoy the sleep of the exhausted.  What a great place we all get to enjoy our Arimas!
Oh, just south of Rocky Point we found a cabin cruiser up on the beach...

Very nice Mark. Water looks super. Wish there were shrimp here in this area. Wife loves them.

Good job Mark. The pics are great.   surprised the salvage guys haven't stripped that beached boat yet. Still has the raydome.

Been steadily stuffing the freezer with those beauties.  Averaging 7lbs of tails per limit has helped. Last week even with horrible tides, we came home with 37lbs of tails (in the car). Also caught a few rockfish and a ling which had to go back. I may be up for one more trip before I have enough for the whole year.

For us, we used 44 gallons of fuel at approximately $3.50/ gallon (marina pricing) costing about $150 for the day. It would make a lot of sense to at least spend the night so you can double the limit for the same gas.  My numbers are from South Whidbey.

PG 125 of the regs has the poison pill for overnight 2 limit trips. Additional qty must be frozen. I sent my additional frozen qty back with my wife in the car to preclude any questions if checked. If you could solid freeze day 1 catch it would work. Dry ICE?

PG 125?....  Oh well, what do you do.  It was nice to see a familiar face in a new area.  I will do a full report in the fishing section when I can get some good sleep.  Couldn't ask for better weather up there.

As for the boat race... I think I won it hands down.

Yeah, not too bad.  You think about it what we had onboard.  2 scotty downriggers, 1 pot puller, 600 shrimp on ice, 6 downrigger balls, 3 sleeping bags, 3 totes full of camping gear, 3 bags of clothes, 1 coleman 12volt cooler with drinks, crab pot, porta potti, almost full tank of fuel, 4 fishing rods, tackle, 14 gallon water tank, and only God knows what other stuff.

Mark, looks like you, John and team had a great day.   Thanks for sharing.  Michelle and I are planning at least one week up in the islands next summer.

Bruce,

We are looking to do the same thing next summer.  Probably a week later so it coincides with the crabbing season up there as well.  This will probably be an annual trip for us, but with some better planning.
