Hello,

I'm finishing up with my rewire and have some questions about how best to reconnect to my Lewmar Windlass and new Lewmar Windlass switch.

Before the rewire the previous owner had the windlass directly connected to the battery, then about a 12' run of 8 awg to a Lewmar breaker next to the switch on the starboard side just forward the throttle. Seemed like a long/undersized run BEFORE the breaker, but it was in a convenient location while driving. So it went battery (12' run) > Breaker > Windlass switch > Windlass (8' run).

For my current rewire/configuration I have dual batteries (Starboard)

House - MBRF with 200a fuse > Battery switch (on-off-combined) connected by 2 awg > Safety Hub 150 (60a) > front fuse panel 4awg
+ Separate 4awg run from Battery switch to Windlass
MBRF with 50a fuse > ACR connected by 6awg.

Start - MBRF with 200a fuse > Battery switch (on-off-combined) connected by 2 awg > Outboard1 (Mercury 115 CT), Outboard 2 (Mercury 15 EFI)
MBRF with 50a fuse > ACR connected by 6 awg.

Q1: Since I'm fused at the battery (200a) am I ok to not use the Breaker up front and wire directly to the switch given that I'm fused at the battery (MBRF)?

Q2: Would it be better to wire directly to the battery then through the battery switch?

Q3: If Q3 is (yes) should I relocate the Lewmar breaker to the rear panel to be closer to the battery and avoid the long/unprotected run up to the helm.Although this is
much less convenient to use in this location.

Q4: what type of lugs/connectors do I need to connect to the Lewmar windlass switch it looks like small screws secure the wire, but I have so far not been able to find the
proper way to connect to the switch. Maybe it's a regular battery lug with very small hole for screw? It must be totally obvious and that's why nobody shows/mentions the
connectors that I've found so far. Wire size 4 awg.

You can see in the image where I opened up the battery switch for the 4awg run to the windlass switch along with the 4awg run from safety hub to front panel. I've done some cable management since I took this photo but you get the idea.

Trying to get this buttoned up so I can move on to the fuel system and get back in the water.

Thank you for any help or opinions you may have on this subject.

Done tons of Lewmar winches, usually 6 or 4 AWG depending on size of motor and run length.
I go direct off the battery with the breaker as close to the battery as possible. This way the load carrying run is protected. You have to use the breaker as it will open if you snag and overload the windlass, so do not install on the MRBF.

Send me a pic of you connections as they do make lugs that will work.

I used this type of breaker. It also serves as a cut-off switch.

Thank you for the information.

Windlass is a Lewmar Pro-Series 700 with Lewmar 50a Breaker/isolator installed to the right of the steering wheel, which didn't seem like the ideal place as it was so far from the battery.

House battery currently has MBRF to battery switch (200a) and ACR (50a) in addition to being directly connected to a water witch sensor by inline fuse (7.5a). In the event electronics get hosed and the batteries still have juice the bilge pumps will still work.

I have enough extra 4 awg wire that I will make another connection to the House battery with a short run over to my rear panel where I'll add a new Lewmar (or Croaker's recommendation) fuse breaker then run that line directly to the switch but bypassing the old breaker up front. This will add fuse protection at/near the start of the run instead of at the end.

Does this sound about right?

With the deeper bait tank on the starboard side on the new boat there is even less room than on my 19' Sea Ranger, which I already thought was cramped.

If you have a better location for the breaker please let me know? Also would ~ 2.5'-3' run from battery to panel be ok? This is about the run size I anticipate to get from battery to breaker on panel then 12' +/- to switch.

Included a picture of the back of the switch and rear panel for reference. Running out of room on the panel, but not sure where else I could put the breaker?

Thank you for your time!

Yes breaker close to the rear since you are 2.5' you can put a wire loom on that short section for added protection.

Yes it's a AWG 4 lug see attached link.

Thx Dev

Which is preferred, hard wire to house or start battery for Windlass?

House by far as with the high current draw you don't kill your start.
Usually all types of winches, pullers are on the house.

Had to take advantage of this weather and switch gears for some fiberglass work I haven't been able to do, but I was able to mock up the rear panel one last time. Ended up having plenty of room for the fuse breaker, which will run directly to the house battery and bypass the MBRF fuses.

Waiting on the last if the looming and I can get this installed.

Thx all

So the new Windlass switch (pictured above) did not come with a diagram. I've scoured the internet and still have not found a diagram.

Does anyone know which connections are to (+) and (-) and which connect to the battery (input) and which connect to the Windlass (output)?
