The recent fog threads got me to do some window shopping for radar. Still not on my real shopping list, but I did get very interested in Furuno's 1st Watch Wireless Radar. No data cable to route, displays on iOS devices, able to overlay on Furuno's maps on the iPad/iPhone. Available for about $900.

At first glance, that looks like a pretty good solution.

I'm strongly considering this unit.
I've heard really good reviews considering the price.
might pull the trigger after i get lost in the fog once... :jester:

It is appealing to me too. Then again, I'd need somewhere to mount it. The upgrade path is strewn with $$$.

I installed this dome last fall. So far I've been pretty impressed, but I don't have much previous experience to base that on. During my practice runs it picked up every little obstacle that I could see, but I haven't tested with birds or crab pot buoys. I use it wirelessly with a Furuno 1871. I haven't tried it with an iPad yet, mostly because I don't own one, but that could be a fairly inexpensive option for quality radar.

Interesting but I really dont see any big advantage over conventional. If you have to run a power cable to the dome then run 2 cables and hardwire it, which is always preferable over wireless. If i'm navigating at night or in heavy fog i'm gonna be looking at my mfd and not my iphone. Plus all of the higher end mfd's give one the ability to mirror the mfd display to a phone or tablet to be uses when at a secondary steering station.

I'd rather be drinking in a bar wishing I was on the ocean, than be on the ocean wishing I was in a bar.

I hear ya there.
You can still connect it to any compatible head-unit. It just also has the option to go wireless with a phone/ipad.

Considering this radar also. I think paired with a Furuno 1971 could be a pretty nice setup

Has anyone found the list of compatible head units? I would like to run it direct to a dedicated screen...

Only models it will directly connect to are 1871 and 1971

Si Tex also makes a similar system. It's got a bigger better radar that connects to a few of their MFDs.
