Trailer Stability

I have noticed a difference between how my 19SR with a single axle EZ Loader trailer trailers as compared to my previous boat, also a 19ft Fibreglass boat(19ft Bayliner Cuddy) on also a similar length single axle trailer.  The Arima on the EZ loader isn't as stable as my previous boat.  If I make a correction while on the highway(difting to close to one edge of the lane and then correct to get closer to center of lane) I notice a bit of trailer sway.  It doesn't last long and doesn't feel unsafe but it just doesn't feel as stable as it should and something that I didn't experience with my previous boat.  I am going to go to a weigh station in the next week or so to get the gross weight of the boat + trailer and figure out my tongue weight to see if it's correctly set.

We know that our Arimas are butt heavy with a full tank of fuel, outboard hanging off the back, kicker, dual batteries etc...  I believe my trailer setup is the stock setup and nothing has been adjusted by the previous owner.  Just curious as to know how many owners have had to make adjustments(move boat forward/back on trailer or move location of axle) on the stock trailer that comes with the arimas.

I am wondering if this is normal based on how the Arimas tow or whether it's due to my setup not being correctly adjusted.

My little Arima is very stable. Previous to this I had a Double Eagle.

Might be your set up. I know I had to move my boat forward for more tongue weight once I installed my fuel tank, batteries and kicker.

I have a Roadrunner bunk trailer.

As you suggest, first thing is to know the weight of the boat and trailer, and see if the tongue weight is correct. Should be about 7-10% of the total weight. Can you lift the tongue by hand? If so, it's too light.

something just feels off on the setup.  I will get it weighed and try to see if the tongue weight needs to be adjusted.   Was just curious to see how many folks had to make adjustments or whether the stock setup works well.

Try weighing the tongue weight with a bathroom scale. My EZ loader trailer and 16SC tows great. On your rig I would guess (estimating your boat and trailer weight) your tongue weight should be atleast 350#

One cause could be that you are not tracking correctly. Though rare if the axle is not square, i.e. one wheel slightly forward of the other, you'll track slightly to one side or the other. Easy to check. Measure from the ball to each wheel. Should measure the same.

It's more likely due to tongue weight but  :shrug9: . It did happen to me once. First thing I fixed after buying the boat/trailer and hauling it home. Made for some interesting freeway driving.

Like J did, I too had to move my boat forward for a little more tongue weight, I believe I'm at 200 pounds for my 16SC. Like fisher suggested use a bathroom scale, that's how I did mine. I have no problems with sway and I've been tested a few times here on the LA freeways.

Thanks everyone. I will check to see if the axle is square.  There is a government scale about 25 mins drive where they will weigh your rig for free.  I am kind of curious to see what my 19SR weighs on its own.  I figure the trailer is probably about 600-700 lbs.  Will measure truck and trailer and boat together.   Then move the truck so that the trailer wheels are off the scale and take weight measurement.  Then weigh truck on its own.  Should be able to get all the figures from this.

When you get to the scale, pull your tow rig forward so that the rear wheels are JUST past the end of the scale, but the trailer tongue is still above the scale.   This reading gives you gives you axle weight.   Then, disengage the trailer coupler and crank up your tongue jack so that no weight is on the hitch ball - this reading gives you total towed weight.   Total weight minus axle weight = tongue weight.   My SR19 Hdtp/bulkhead with 115 Honda is heavy - with full fuel and cruising gear = 3880# gross, with 350# tongue weight.  Interestingly, with no gear and only 15 gal. of fuel, tongue weight goes UP to 400#,, which shows how much 200# of fuel and some gear way back behind the axle affects tongue weight.
AS LZB suggests, check axle alignment, from center of coupler to both sides of axle.  Load range D radials at 65 psi. made a big difference for me, as well.

Mariner, Where is the gov. scale you are planning to go to? This is on my list as well. Thanks!

I think there's one on south bound 99 just before the tunnel. Another in delta just under Alex Fraser. You do want to hit these when it's closed, just in case you ar over your capacity.
I do need to weigh my setup also.

Thanks Whale!

Definitely better to do it when no one is around. Bit of a private moment when checking a ships weight. Especially boats know for being heavy in the stern.  :jester:

The one that's closest to me is the one neat the truck crossing in white Rock.

I was told the one in delta is extremely busy.  I wasn't aware you could. Use the scale when they are closed.  I thought it was only operational when someone was in their office but I guess having it open 24/7 for safety makes sense.

I make sure the water tank in the cuddy is full at all times, this adds 120 pounds to the very front of the boat.  If your tank isn't full you might try filling it before hitting the road to see if that makes a difference.  I could save you having to move the boat forward on your trailer.

Very good point.  I drained 50 percent of it in prep for winter to allow room for expansion from freezing.
