The age-old scotty downrigger mount question

I did do some searching on this topic through the archives, but haven't really found a good answer.

The big question...mount the standard scotty DR base on the gunnel or the right-angle mount?

I originally thought the right-angle mount, and got 2 of them.  But I'm a little concerned that they are really only secured with two screws into the side of the gunnel.  It also hangs over quite a bit on the inside and I'm slightly concerned about bumping into it alot

The gunnel on the 19 is wider than my SE and it *looks* like the regular base would work.  I.e. looks like the screws would make it through clear without hitting the inside of the hull or the inside of the vertical part of the gunnel.  But it would be very close.

Can anyone provide guidance before I take a drill to my boat?   I attached a pic showing the two mounts placed on the gunnel.

I have Cannons, so not apples to oranges, but I believe the bases are the same basic size.  Mine fit, but just barely, and there is not room for a fender washer on the underside (though it probably isn't really needed).

I used the angle brackets on the SR 19.  Didn't like the regular mount holes being so close to the gunnel edge.

One bolt thru the top to a washer backed fiber nut gives more security,

I did the angle mounts on my 17 as the gunnels were too narrow for the factory Scotty mounting holes on the standard bracket. If I had to do it again I would use the standard mount and change the mount holes. I didn't really like the flex on side mount so ended up mounting a 12" length of 4" x 4" aluminum angle 3/8" thick on inside of gunnel. Getting that in there was an adventure in itself ☺

Used the right angle once, but wouldn't recommend them.  You have to secure from the top for them to be stable so why use them?  I'd just make a starboard adapter plate for the gunnel.

I used the standard mounts on my SR 17 with the swivel base. Comparing the two varities, I like  the standard mount much better.

I used the top plate also but you must center it and if your gunnel tops are thick on the corners on the inside you will be using longer hardware and may have to do some grinding so the washers and nuts fit inside the gunnels. I use 11LB canon balls and have scotty 1106's with swivel bases, no issues.

You might consider Burnewiin mounts. Super strong, fit the gunnel well, and very versatile. I like the quick removal for storage, maintenance and security. Not to mention having it for other uses.

A bit spendy though, but when you consider what your putting out on your twofootitis, what the heck!

Dave have you used them with a Ace type pot puller.  I was just playing with them at Fisheries Supply yesterday. Pricy but well made.

Rory I have the standard gunnel mount.

I have the standard gunnel mount and they work fine.  The standard mounts are a little wider than the gunnel just like they are shown in your photo.

I don't like the looks of the angle ones.

Another option might be a custom rail system.

I Have used the tree system on my Arima and on other boats to. I can move them remove or add a down rigger if I want

SR19 here, standard Scotty base fit no problem, even room for washer if centered right.

I like Dbhazjack's post except for the fact there does not appear to be a 'lock' to hold stuff in place when taking rod out of the holder.  Having seen one of my spendier rod holders 'join the fishies', I would be concerned about that element of the design...

The more I look at Hunter's rail mount the more I like it.  I was thinking when using the Ace Line Hauler it would add some height to the system, providing an easier haul into the boat.  A bait boy would be even better, but I gotta upgrade to a bigger boat to have room for one of those.   :flag:

I believe there is a spring loaded clip on the side of the mount, which locks the accessory in place. "No swimming with the fishies"

I don't have my Scotty's mounted but if/when I do.
I'll probably go with the angle mounts and put a bolt through the top of the gunnel along with the mount.

Of course...I f I were to ever get another boat I'd go with the Rail mount no doubt...they look great and serve multiple purposes.

Doesn't help you much I know but I wanted to check out my new avatar and signature.

That is a great point Terry. I just bought some base's from hunter  But I had a Scotty mount on the rail on a Wooldrigde I had and it worked great. If i end up with another 19' Arima I would seriously consider mounting a short rail near the rear and mount them there using the rail mount. It would also raise the height a bit which would also help withe the Scotty pot puller. Great idea SK. :smile1: I really like it!

Looks really good Hunter. That is the ticket if you ask me and my new mounts would work just like that!:beerchug:

Just went outside and took a couple of measurements on my rail bases...   As you can see, this just might be an answer for folks who may be having any mounting issues that result from the "width" of the gunnels.   The baseplate on my mount is 4 inches wide...... and it might be hard to see in the pic, but the center to center measurement on the bolt holes is right about 3 1/8.     The plate on the top of my mount is 5 1/5 " and pre-dilled to mount the Scotty standard base....... perfectly..   Additionally, the rail "ends" are welded 3/8" thru bolts so you can get a nice big ass fender washer on the underside and these also add a lot to the overall strength.   These rails are custom made to fit an Arima.

As for overall strength to "spread" the load on the underside of the gunnel. I know that some guys use aluminum or even marine ply..   I use 3/4 poly (the cutting board stuff) along with the biggest fender washers that will fit.   These mounts along with a Scotty puller hauled 30 lb + crab pots all day today.
