Title: Knarly Doood
Post by: Mooch on January 18, 2018, 08:01:18 PM
Crab reports have been pretty good coming out of the 2.  Maybe tomorrow isn't such a good day to drop a few pots.

I think the whole west coast will have the same conditions. Earlier this week they had the top surfers in the world on notice for a possible go at Mavericks in Half Moon Bay Ca. They were expecting 30+ foot waves

Luckily those two in the 19 ft Boston Whaler were rescued. Both were NOT wearing life jackets! REALLY?

I used to want a Boston Whaler, but I've seen way to many capsize reports. Now I want an Arima....

They should have never been out there. Whalers won't sink, but they can still flip

I used to want a Boston Whaler also. I remember coming into the boat ramp one day after fishing and talking to a man for a bit. I told him I was interested in a Whaler and he advised against it. He also said of many reports of capsized Whalers in our area. I do still think they are a very capable boat, but I wanted some weather protection and have been wanting an Arima for a long time

You guys are right.  Those little (what I call) "cathedral-hulled" Whalers have a propensity for flipping.   Some years ago 2 kids died off Cape Cod when that happened in one of those.  I can still vaguely remember the film on the news showing that thing upside down in the water.  Here's what I say today:  Don't want a big boat?  Want a small sea worthy boat?  Get an Arima Sea Hunter.  IMO, (size for size) it's a heck-of-a-lot safer.

Now if they'd just stretch it 5".

So........I'm going to buy a nice small Arima and move to Oregon.......near the Columbia River, so I can go boating.  As soon as they let me out of this "hospital", of course.   You'll excuse me now, won't you?......I have to finish cutting-out these paper dolls before the "bugs" come back.  :hoboy:

There's good reason that MLB School is at the mouth of the Columbia.  I would not be at all surprised to learn they were out 'practicing' in that last storm.  Night has to be difficult to judge wave action.  NOAA was reporting 60' at 13 seconds just off the coast Wednesday or Thursday.

FYI, My boat spent that time in my shop with the door closed

Fixer, I don't blame you.  Sometimes I wonder if the mouth of that river is ever calm enough (for long enough) to trust going out of it in a small boat.  I mean, what if you go out in the morning when it's like a lake, then try coming in later when it looks like a scene from "The Perfect Storm"?   :shrug9:

No bueno if crossing on a strong, outgoing tide with an opposing wind. If you ever have, you learn very quickly not to ever do it again  You really need to time the tides just right. Of course there's exceptions where the water may have that flat like a lake look, but a few hours later it could look like that video

A few years ago some of the guys at the Motor Lifeboat School at the mouth of the Columbia put together this video of a bunch of training footage.  Cool stuff... especially about 2 minutes 45 seconds in, when they intentionally roll a 47' aluminum MLB and allow it to self right.

https://youtu.be/aFb3yPtcakc

Also some cool shots of rescue swimmers training, and crews training on the Victory, a 1950's era 52' MLB that was restored a few years ago.

Cape Disappointment?  Man.......they named that place right!  Try that with your Arima and you could be dining on a "windshield sandwich".   :hoboy:

That is no joke.    Those are some tough boats and well trained guys.   Water is so powerful and beautiful.

I went to the MLB School at the Cape in '72. I was stationed at Quillayute at the time. I was going to get out in '72 but thanks to the school decided to stay in for another 6 years. Really learned a lot there and after the school I was out on the 44's playing in the surf when ever I could go. Learned what the boat could take and how she handled in all kinds of crap. Got stuck with the nasty boat calls after that, ugh. Really loved those boats. Really sad when one of them ended up on the beach a few years later and I think 4 CG lives lost. Really a sad deal. Didn't have the new 47's when I left so never got to run one. Heard though that the computer run engines weren't liked at first. When they needed power the computer argued and caused a few cuss words up on top so I guess they were re-worked. I would love to go back and try one out! I love being on the water but I also have a lot of respect for it.

Some pretty bizarre history behind the Cape Disappointment name.

A Spanish explorer (Bruno Heceta) mapped the OR/WA coast in 1775, and described a massive river/estuary with a prominent headland (cape) on the North side.  Englishman John Meares came along 12 years later and couldn't find it, so he said the Spaniard was exagerating and mocked him by naming the cape "Cape Disappointment."  Robert Gray (an American) found it a few years later, and tried to rename it "Cape Hancock" but the "Disappointment" name stuck.

There's a great book on the early history of European settlement on the lower Columbia called "Pacific Empire".... worth a read if you are a history buff.  If you are just a beer buff, it will explain why Forte George Brewing company in Astoria, OR is named as it is!
