Title: Will NMEA 2000 data show accurate engine RPM?
Post by: Fisherdv on January 04, 2018, 02:45:54 PM
May replace my FF/GPS soon and would really like to have the motor networked via NMEA 2000 to get fuel burn, engine data etc. Will the data shown include engine RPM that’s more accurate than an analog RPM gauge? Would a Lowrance HDS 7 be a good choice? I currently have a Lowrance elite 5 that’s not NMEA 2000 compatible

It shows 100% accurate data, as it's pulling it from the engine's control computer (ECM or engine control module).

It's more accurate than the analog tachs of old.

I am very happy with my Lowrance HDS-7 and 5 Gen 2's I have networked.

I have a digital tach and the Garmin Nema data is exactly the same.

I also like the Lowrance, why? I guess it’s cause that’s what I’m used to. I also like the bottom contours and depth on the mapping. It seems pretty accurate and a must for me when navigating shallow areas of the bay, especially on a low tide

My HDS 9 Gen 3 is accurate also... I have the Yamaha command link and the numbers on my Lowerance match my Yamaha gauges.

This is exactly what I’m looking for. RPM, Fuel burn, engine temp, etc. on my FF readout. So do I just need a NMEA 2000 compatible FF/GPS and a NMEA 2000 cable to connect to my motor? Is that all the accessories required to do it?

I am fairly certain you need a "network". There are NMEA 2000 starter kits that will suffice. The network needs power, 2 t fittings and termination caps. Thats how its wired  on my boat. Not sure if you can go directly to the head unit with the NMEA cable.

Thx, I’m sure a question or two will come up when I’m ready to wire it up

Here is the cable you need from the engine to the network:  http://www.partspak.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=552490&gclid=CjwKCAiAhMLSBRBJEiwAlFrsThMi6DR_KlH9zTeIIOjMOgRE0jEZupnaV09qfqHREqLTqIfnYzb3uBoCdGcQAvD_BwE

The biggest issue you may have is just getting the cable through the cable boots since the hook up is pretty easy. Use plenty of "lube" and you should be ok ). Think there are some good threads somewhere talking about how you tape a smaller wire to the end of the nema cable to get it started through the cable boot so you can pull it through. Had to re-tape my "starter" wire after I pulled it off the first try but with enough lube and tape it finally went through both boots and the rest was easy.
