Title: ArimaOwners Hosted Photos
Post by: Danno on November 29, 2017, 03:21:06 PM
We have a problem with photos posted from web sites and from photo hosting sites like photo bucket. At some point in time, those photos get removed from the pages or locked out. We've lost a great deal of help-photos due to PhotoBucket going to a pay per use site. Loss of photos linked from various web sites invariably becomes dead links.

I would like to shift our process so that all photos have to be uploaded to the ArimaOwners photo galleries before they can be posted in a thread. That way, they'll never be lost.

Thoughts?

Can personal photos from a computer or phone still be attached in a post directly, or only through the gallery?

I think Danno is saying ALL photo's so there is no chance of losing photos at a later date.

It would just be another process to get the photos to a thread, I think we all could get used to it......it is aggravating to see all the photo bucket photos blocked out, kind of black mail on photo buckets part.

Not all that complicated guys...  This thread under Tips and Forum Questions lays it out.  As convenient as something like photobucket?  I would not know as I think that system is pretty complicated...  From your phone?  Nope..

This is simple straight forward and it works.  Just remember to get both square brackets when you copy the link...  Even a marine caveman can do it

I think it's a good idea, and I should be using arimaowners gallery for posting pictures, but I haven't, so I'm not 100% on how it works when moving pictures.

So I have a question?

If you upload pictures to your album named "General Pictures" on arimaowners, but then one day you rearrange your pictures and move a few pictures from your "General Pictures" to another album named "Boat Pictures", will those pictures and the links you posted in a thread awhile back be broken and not viewable because you moved them?

I bring this up because photobucket and a few other picture hosting sites links will "break", because a new link is generated for that picture if you move the picture to another album or edit the picture.

I know the best thing to do is to leave them alone, but I know personally I move pictures around to keep things organized.

You can use the attachments option but it will not accept photos over a certain size. Today's cameras put out mega-MB photos and for the internet, and to save space, the gallery software resizes the photo and lowers the resolution.

The ArimaOwners Gallery does not have an easy way to sort photos and move them around. Here's a test. I am posting this photo from my misc photo site:

It's still there after I deleted it. I'm liking this!

I have not upgraded the Gallery software in a long time. They charge a fee for it but this would be worth getting our gallery upgraded.

Since the photo-bucket fiasco, and some of the challenges with using Google photos to share stuff, I've been using my Arima gallery this way already.

Dan, is there any issue with storage and bandwidth fees?

The risk of losing the tremendous resource that our pics represent would make it worth the effort to convert.
Do we need to do a little fundraiser to cover the costs?

I'm not sure what you mean by convert but if your talking about finding all of the posts with non-ArimaOwners.com photos, there's no easy way to do it. You would have to search every post and look at the URL for each photo. Ugh. I can barely keep up with all of the posts here let alone go back and look at them again.

Convert them to gallery based pics rather than from outside sources...  Not good if the host changes their policies and our pics disappear.

Has anybody been able to create a personal gallery or add pictures to a personal gallery from an IPhone?
I don't even see an option to finish step 2 or 3 of the instructions using my phone. I don't own or have access to a computer.
I use the super easy to use free iPhone app (Resize it)to reduce my pictures to 640-853. After resizing the photo, you save the new resized image back on to your phone. I then own that new resized picture and without any worry that they might want the rights back in the future. I then post the picture from my personal photos on my phone to the group. If anybody has any suggestions how I can setup personal gallery on my iPhone I'd appreciate it. Thanks

I use an iPhone and iPad to add pictures to my gallery. No problem.

You don't really have to do much to set it up. From your iPhone Just go to ... Gallery>My Gallery>Add Picture.  ....or "Add Category > Add Picture"

Or you could figure out how to do this.  You may not have noticed, but there are no ads, or charges to the membership to use this site.  Upgrades often cost $$$.  We run from sales of stuff like caps, key chains and a couple of generous donations from things like Woody's estate...

We have never 'forced' anyone to use any particular method to post pictures.  The system that is in place now, has been in place since we initiated this site in Jan. 2011.  Please note the date of the post explaining how to use our system http://www.arimaowners.com/index.php?topic=130.0 .  Fishing eagle made that post soon after we initiated the site.  It seems to have worked well since...

There are multiple ways of working with a phone or tablet here. Using Safari or your phone's web browser would be just like using a PC. In that case, the photo can be pulled from the AO gallery, your phone's photo directory or from a third party service like Photobucket.

I use Tapatalk when on my iPhone or iPad but I'm not sure if Tapatalk hosts the photo similar to Photobucket or if the image is uploaded to ArimaOwners. I may have to look at this closer.

There is also the attachment feature here on AO but I'll have to go back and look how that works.

Largely through your donation as I remember correctly. That is the software we continue to use. There have been upgrades since that I have not purchased. I am not a complete computer geek so upgrades make me nervous. I try to keep them to the minimum. Plus, some of the upgrades are for forum sites with much different needs than what we have here. Add that to the issue of teaching our old dogs new tricks and I tend to be conservative with changes.

Seeing what happened to your posts is exactly what brought this up. It's a shame to see the useful information lost. I want to fix this but in a way that won't piss too many people off. Using the Gallery isn't the easiest so many have chosen other routes to posting pictures. If I shut down those methods, I'll make some unhappy. If we make the changes, I hope they'll understand why.

One program I use to resize pictures on my PC is a freeware program called irfanview ( http://www.irfanview.com ) that I've used for years. It's simple to use and has 1 touch preset sizes to choose from. You can do some other things like cropping, and basic editing with it to. It's a small program so doesn't take a lot of space.

From my iPhone or iPad I send the picture to my email which gives me the option to resize before I send it. From my email I save the downsized image to my photo library on my device. It works, but image quality is not very good. I really don't even use my laptop anymore

I've been using tapatalk to post pics for a few years here, just attach pics from my phone directly to the post- one step.  However, I don't know if the pics are now residents of our software or if they are somehow linked to tapatalk thus at risk of loss in the future...

Its no different than adding a photo to a email and should be there for good. I can't remove it after 24 hours, there is no link and its super easy!

So question, I have all ways pre sized my photos before saving in documents on my computer. Then used the attachment option to add the photo to the thread. Will this method continue to be OK? Its no different than adding a photo to a email and should be there for good. I can't remove it after 24 hours, there is no link and its super easy!

I just reviewed the attachments settings. They limit or resize (I'm not sure which) the photos to a maximum of 512 kb which is good for being frugal with disc space.  I thought the attachments feature would only provide a photo as an attachment and not as a view-able photo in the post. Here's a test:

Okay, that works but the photo only goes at the end of the post and I had to resize it first.

I'll leave the attachment as an option but know it's limitations. The Gallery is the better yet slower method.

You can add a LARGE file to your gallery.....one at a time. "Add Picture"...no need to resize first...the forum software shrinks it.

To resize for attachments, I use "Image Resize"  on the Apple App Store.  $2.99. It is easy to use and can do a lot more than just resize.

How do you organize photos like BruceL2-fish did? I tried adding pics to my personal gallery and they will only show up under Arima modifications, or Arima fishing etc. I posted under the my gallery. The pics are not there now because I deleted them till I figure out how to post under my personal gallery. I'm using an iPad or iPhone  :anyone:

After you click on MYGALLERY you can start up loading files but if you want to create albums to organize your photos, you need to click on ADD CATEGORY which is at the bottom of the MYGALLERY screen.

The second photo is what my MYGALLERY category albums looks like. Yours will be different depending on what you name yours, how many you add and if you apply a avatar to each category.

Danno is correct and I followed the instructions that Russ had previously pointed to in an old post.   I also discovered that if I add the pictures to my Gallery I do not need to resize first, when up loaded it does it for me.   That is cool.   I guess I learned something this weekend.   Seems pretty easy, once I started to organize.

After seeing the pics of the Pacific Halibut that GregE and Bruce posted I decided not to post my California Halibut pics. Makes mine look like sand dabs. Croaker was right.

I saw a bulk/ multiple pic upload option yesterday but can't find it.  Loading one pic takes 8 steps, looking for a short cut

Greg,

Once you've created one or more categories in your MYGALLERY gallery, enter the category and the option to bulk load photos is at the bottom.

I remember paying for the software gallery when we started this site. Are we still using what was paid for or do we need to upgrade again?

Darren

Largely through your donation as I remember correctly. That is the software we continue to use. There have been upgrades since that I have not purchased. I am not a complete computer geek so upgrades make me nervous. I try to keep them to the minimum. Plus, some of the upgrades are for forum sites with much different needs than what we have here. Add that to the issue of teaching our old dogs new tricks and I tend to be conservative with changes.

Okay. I did some updates this last weekend. I had to update the forum software to stay ahead of the hackers. So that's taken care of. I also looked into the latest version of the Gallery add-on software and for $25, I upgraded it. I haven't explored all of thte new features yet but tfor those interested, here's a list:

Danno....

I have been watching this thread closely in hopes of learning a way to MOVE all of "My Images" into "My Gallery".

I am unable to find a way to do a single move let alone a block move of several pictures.

Can you help me out here?  I'm just trying to get all of my ARIMA pictures into 1 place....

Thanks!

Except it turned my photos upside down.  :shrug9:

Salmon King not sure if you already found a way, but I might have a way for you to move your pictures from your "My Images" to your "My Gallery".
I saw you only have 1 category in your gallery, so you might need to create a new category so you can move pictures.
Also I didn't see or know of a way to do a bulk picture move, as I don't know if there is one. Also not sure if this is the best way to do what you want to do.

I made a short video and hopefully it will help you out if this what you were thinking of.
I created this on my Android phone, which is like doing it on a PC and probably the same on a Mac.

Thanks aj...
I gave up on it.
Even after purging my pictures I still have too many to move doing it 1 at a time.
