I was out today fishing and cruising and my overheat buzzer and red light came on. I was exploring new areas and was cruising slowly and then was running close to WOT, trimmed the motor a bit to high and the prop lost grip for about a second then trimmed it back down. About 30 seconds later the warning buzzed loudly and red warning light came on. I shut down the motor for about 5 min then started it again and no warning. I checked the water intake for blockage and didn't see anything. I was in the river and there was quite a bit of debris in the water. Outside temp was about 68, and water temp was about 60. I proceeded on my way again and no warnings the rest of the time. Motor is a new Honda 60HP, about 50 hours on it. The motor was "peeing" and oil level was OK. Have any of you guys with a Honda had this happen? Is it anything I should be concerned about or something I should look into further? Thx for any input
I wouldn't worry about it. The engine software is designed to prevent damage and warn you before it gets bad. Unless it is something that hapens without a cause, I would not loose a wink of sleep over this.
The trimming up may have caused the impeller to grab air rather than water for a bit, which caused the overheat alarm. Nothing to worry about.
My big Honda likes A LOT of water flow on the muffs. Once when I was flushing the motor at the boat cleaning area on a busy day at Newport, I had an overheat alarm due to the lack of water pressure from the muffs. Enough to get water into the cooling jacket, not enough to keep it cool. Just turn the motor off and let it cool.
If it repeats a couple of times, have it looked at.
