Title: Fire extinguisher recall
Post by: Diablo on November 02, 2017, 03:25:54 PM
There is a big recall on fire extinguishers dating back as far as 1973. Not real clear to find out if yours is covered. Here is the link.

Thanks Diablo!
I went out this morning and checked mine and sure enough I have one.
But I'm glad I have 2 onboard and my main one is a rechargeable fire extinguisher that I get certified.

2 out of 3 of mine were affected............

Here's the better links I sent to my family:

All this is easily done online from this Kidde web page:
    https://inmarmarketaction.com/kidde/Kidde284US/

And here’s a better link to an ID Guide for plastic handle models:
    https://s3.amazonaws.com/inmar-adx-files/N130284/US_Plastic+Handle+Product+ID+Guide.pdf

Check 'em -- before you need 'em and wreck 'em!

WOW!!  What an eye opener for me.  I have a recalled model, but not the right year...  I bought my first Arima in 2009 but my extinguisher, which I bought at the same time, has a date label from 2002...

I can still feel the powder move when I shake it so I guess still good and not among those units recalled...  Strange that it would be 7 years old when I bought it???

Thanks Old no7 for posting those links, both of mine were on the list so I registered them and received a reply that I will be sent 2 new ones in 15-20 days! It is good to see that they are standing behind them and replacing them. I am sure this is going to cost them many million's of $$$$$

Check your date again. It’s not the last five numbers. It’s the fifth to ninth. I didn’t do it right and thought mine was not covered.

“Digits five through nine represent the day and year of manufacture in DDDYY format. Date codes for recalled models manufactured from January 2, 2012 through August 15, 2017 are 00212 through 22717.  For units produced before 2007, a date code is not printed on the fire extinguisher.”

That date is only for models H110G many other models are covered. I have one from my shop that I was going to take to the dump. Built in 1974 and it’s covered.  :bigshock:

The whole number is  074012602   :shrug9:

I think I will put in a claim and let them figure it out

Thanks Old no7 for posting those links, both of mine were on the list...

Glad to help!

I'm now up to 3 OUT OF 4 of ours here at the house will be replaced!

And to think for all those years, I had "trusted" the Kidde name.............

I just might keep the old ones as "backups" too... But use NEW ones if/when, you know.

I always check my fire extinguishers every year and replace them every 5 years whether they need it or not.

Called Kidde today. The guy with whom I spoke didn’t instill a lot of confidence. Perhaps it was his first day on the job. 2 of 3 extinguishers I keep in the boat are involved in the recall.

Diablo  -  Big thanks!!  I called Kidde today and they were very helpful.  And gave me the info to find the date by looking on the bottom of the unit.  Turns out this is one of the items that fits the recall standards.  They say I should be getting a new unit within 15 or 20 days.  Once again, thank you.  Oh yeah! They asked where I found out about the recall. Told him about our great site.

I got a replacement for one of three extinguishers today. You get a new extinguisher plus a return shipping label. Use the new box plus the shipping box to send back the old extinguisher. You can even call FedX for pick up. Eazy peazy. I didn’t really think they would want the old extinguishers left in service.
Thanks for the new extinguisher Kiddy.

The old extinguisher is one less bottle they need to manufacturer -- plus-- the defective units are taken out of circulation thus reducing their legal exposure...  Smart move in my opinion.

I have two that will be heading back to kiddee tomorrow.

Mine is “unaffected”
Title: Re: Fire extinguisher recall
Post by: tsuribaka on November 21, 2017, 04:49:13 PM
If the web page tells you your extinguisher is "unaffected" you might want to call the number to confirm. One we have from 1986 that very clearly has a plastic handle and nozzle came back "unaffected." I called to have them explain how they could be sure this plastic one could be trusted where the others could not. The operator said they've had many times where the web page says an extinguisher is "unaffected" but if the operator puts in the same info it comes back as "affected." Which is what happened in my case.

If I burn up and die, I am never going to buy another Kidde product !   :nono:

Long time happening, and a thread resurrection... but thanks Diablo!!

My extinguisher was under the recall, and although I filed for a replacement before Xmas, I just got my new one last week.  Installed and looking pretty.  My 2014 extinguisher is now a 2018...and for FREE!

So any of you guys actually send the old one back?

I keep finding them around my place. I’ve now had 8 replaced, and just found another yesterday. It took about a month to get the last ones (three at once).

The PIA is sending the old ones back. Since it’s pressurized, and a hazardous material you cannot drop it off at Fed Ex with the label they provide you. I tried, and wasted a trip. The paper return instructions said this but I tried anyway  So I called Fed ex to schedule a pick up while was at work and after talking to a virtual person for 5 min I finally got through to an actual person. I stated I wanted to schedule a pick up for a return and they asked for the tracking numbers. I told him I was at work and did not have the numbers with me. He said he cannot schedule a pick up without them. So it’s such a hassle to send them back that I think I’ll just keep them

When they contact me to ask why I didn’t send the old one back I will tell them they sent the wrong one.

Might be years from now.  :shrug9:

FedUp and UPS phone service is bad.
If you have to call again, once you get the robot, just keep repeating, "representative". But after the 3rd time the system will try and trick you, but just repeat "representative"  again and you'll get connected, same with UPS.
But if you really want some fun, try dealing with DHL  :hoboy:

Returning these things sounds like it can be a bit of a hassle in some cases.  IMO, might not be worth the trouble.  Perhaps checking with your local fire department could shed some light on this.  I've had my extinguisher for quite a while now.  I'm thinking; why not just dump it and write-it-off as a small part of my boating expense? :shrug9:

The first one I returned was easy the UPS agent knew what todo. The second time I returned one the agent didn’t have a clue what to do. I thanked him and called right back and got a different agent that knew what to do.
I would imagine the reason they want them back is to get the defective ones out of the system. Having a fire extinguisher that may not work is not good.

Returning the old one part of the 'deal' ---  If you don't and somebody uses it, you would be liable for any bad things that might happen.  Return is free and they can re-cycle the can.  I'd return it (and did --- 3 of them)

I attempted to drop off a return at a FedEx company store. They wouldn’t take it. I took it to a independent mailbox store, who accepts FedEx, and they took the no problem. Also, my usual driver said he’d take them too.

I received the first one and had no issues sending it back, the second one was supposed to be "unaffected" but they sent me a new one anyway but that return was botched by fedex as they had the pickup listed for Layton, Utah? I live in a Denver suburb! They finally got it straight after 30 minutes on the phone rescheduling the pickup. Now I am good to go for a few years.

We had 4 replaced and I'd taken 3 to the local mail depot that accepts FedEx and they took them. For the last one, they said they can't take fire extinguishers (with the mark on the return box) and said to take it to a FedEx depot.  My son had a FedEx delivery a few days later to the house and the delivery person readily accepted the return package.

I had a similar experience.  I suspect it was some kind of local fire code when dealing with HazMat items (Yes a fire extinguisher is HazMat -- pressurized vessel)
