I have a friend who is commercial fishing in Port Orford right now for salmon.
He is out of town fishing for several weeks staying in a motel and his outboard is giving him fits.
My friend just called me and asked me if I would do him a favor and post the problems he is having with his two year old Honda BF 90 outboard and and see if anybody here has any ideas.
His motor is a fuel injected engine.
He wants to troll between 1900 and 2000 rpm and at that speed his motor keeps slowing down and oscillating and cutting out.
The motor has done this since it was new off and on. (not all the time)
It seems to have gotten worse and is doing it more frequently now.
He has replaced every filter in it and changed the spark plugs. He just got some new injectors and has not had time to replace them yet.
Does anybody have any ideas I could pass on to him.
I keep telling him there are a lot of really smart people on this Arima Site. :cha:
At the very least I know some of you could tell him how to spend his money. :anyone:

At least on my Yammi, injector replacement takes about 45 minutes, including finding the tools...
Probably not the problem, but it's a place to start.

This problem could be anything. I would first get the ECU read (not what you want to hear). The ECU may have codes stored or show why it quit. The fuel injection will try to everything it can to keep the motor running. The trick will be to see what stops working. Ignition switch, kill switch, coil, relays, fuel pump, and the list goes on. The best case would be if you can produce the problem tied up at a dock hooked up to the computer. Good luck and post what he finds out.
Hmm, I wonder if at that speed there is a temperature issue. RPM's too low to get up to full operating temps, maybe?
I agree on the computer diagnosis being the best thing. If the motor runs fine otherwise, my guess is there is either a fueling or temperature issue specific to those RPM's.
Does he have any issues running at higher rpms? Perhaps run it on a portable tank to see if it is a fuel delivery issue related to his tank. Seems like he would have had it fixed under warranty if it has done it since new.
At 2 years old it should be under warranty- why not take it to the dealer? :shrug9:

He told me if the fuel injectors don't work his next step was to try and duplicate at dock and hook up to computer.
He said they had discussed the possibility of the fuel tank dispersal being the problem but sort of dismissed that idea and moved on because the issue occurs regardless of how full the tank is of fuel.

My motor refuses to run at 2000 rpm. It will run higher, or lower than that. I think it has to do with linkage adjustment and Throttle Position Calibration.
Doesn't bother me much because It is not a necessity for me to run at that RPM. :shrug9:

My buddy tightened up his throttle linkage and it fixed the problem.
He is super happy. :arms:
After spending money on every filter and ejector he could think of he finally asked me to post his problem here and ask for suggestions.
His mechanic assured him several times there was no way it could be the throttle but he went ahead and tightened it up and it only acted up twice the next day. Tightened it up a little more and problem fixed.

Tunacious, I'm curious, they trolling for kings? I assume so cuz i think the chinook are very late returners down there. Wondering what kind of boat he's using with just a 90 on it.
They are trolling for Kings. I spent a day on the boat with him. Nice fish.
Next year I am planning on spending at least 4 weeks there.
His boat is a fiberglass boat, not sure of the brand. Below is a couple of photos.
The boat is nothing to look at but works for him and what he's doing.

He has a 36 foot boat that he keeps in Garbaldi. This boat he keeps just for this particular fishery.
You can't see it in the photos but the fish have a ghost like look. They are almost albino looking.
