Title: I may have found my new boat
Post by: Salmon King on December 08, 2017, 01:56:41 PM
Found a very nice (in the pictures anyway) smokercraft Pro Lodge series boat with a Honda on the back.
Price is possibly a bit high maybe.
We'll see on Sunday after I take a peek at her.
This is Boat, Motor, Trailer, Scotty Electrics (which I would sell because I do not like Scotty Downriggers) and a cheap DF.

$8500 for a 2003.
But the outfit is very clean and always garaged so who knows?

Wish it was a walk through windshield model but I figure I can always make a set of canvas for it...can't I?

That looks like a nice boat. And easy to use as long as you stay off the ocean.  :beerchug:

Salmon;  I don't know man!  Don't mean to be critical, but I'd be looking for something with a little more protection and offshore capability.  When I see boats like that, I think two things:  Wet and cold.  Hate to rain on your parade but..............Oh ya, that's another thing......rain!  Remember what I once said about driving down the road in your vehicle without a windshield?

I have never gone off shore yet....don't intend to.
Weather protection would be nice but...I can get canvas made for this and get the protection I need.

Actually I think this is now a moot point.
The seller was supposed to contact me with an address and phone number to set up time for me to see it.
But he never got back to me.  When I last got an email from him he suggested today but never gave me an address...or his phone number.
Might even have been a hoax?!

Anyway...still looking I guess.

I was reading up on it a little. Australian manufacturer. They tried building in the US, but failed.

Yeah, I suppose, within the domestic market alone, the boatbuilding business is inherently competitive as it is......never mind having to factor-in shipping from Australia.  Too bad, as it seems to me there might actually be a market for some smaller well-designed crafts like this.  Oh well.

Maybe check out Lowe, Alumacraft, or G3 boats. They all make small aluminum boats.
Title: Re: I may have found my new boat
Post by: Yachter Yat on December 10, 2017, 05:52:49 PM
Sea Hunter would be my absolute first choice.  That said, I believe Salmon was contemplating perhaps beaching in and around some rocky areas.  Guess he felt glass might not fair so well under those circumstances.  BTW, if you Google-up that Quintrex 430 Fishabout you'll get a better idea of its actual size.  Seeing people on it kind of brings it into perspective.   4.3 meters......A little over 14 feet, I guess.

Aluminum....must be aluminum.
I do not want to be doing fiberglass repairs in my old age.
My use is for lakes...those around me are gravel launches.

I am looking at all different manufacturers although I am leaning towards a smokercraft  mostly because apparently they make the widest 16' Boat.

I do not want a boat bigger than 16' because I fish alone and bigger gets harder to handle...again as I get older.

At this point I'm even considering looking for a 16' Pontoon Boat.

15 foot West coaster wide body might be perfect  :twocents:
Made by Klamath
All welded
Light, easy to handle solo
Great on gas
Easy to tow
Perfect lake boat IMO

Another alternative might be a poly boat like the Smartwave.  Those things appear to be almost indestructible.  They make a small CC called the 4200 or (my favorite) the 4800 closed bow.  Some clips on YouTube.

   Rokefin:

Sounds like you, Chief and I are in agreement.  I think one of the biggest negatives for Salmon is that it's glass.  That said, we have to keep in mind.....even the smallest Arima is a "real boat".  Being such, it might generally require a bit more "care and feeding" than some the alternatives mentioned.  That said, on the plus side, the Arima has obvious advantages over the aforementioned; not the least of which is.....SEAworthiness.   (I'll assume you noticed the emphasis on "SEA")

Again....I do not want to be doing fiberglass repairs at this stage in my life anymore.  Constant beaching of the craft or banging on rocks and gravel new launching and recovery will inevitably damage the keel and chine areas (possibly other areas of the bottom).
I have nothing against an ARIMA.
I loved my SeaChaser and really was torn about selling her.  But it is time to move on and buy the last boat of my life.  One that can take a little abuse without worrying about things like gel coating and glass delamination.

I may find a boat...I may not.  It really don't matter a whole lot.
Over the course of the last 5 or 6 seasons I have caught 90% of my Salmon off the beach anyway?
But I simply will never consider buying another glass boat no matter what it costs.  Heck...I've already turned down 2 free glass boats and several outstanding buys on console boats just because they were glass.

Salmon King, that is a new 15 Klamath Westcoaster. If you search them you can find dealer. That one is in Oregon. I'm not sure if you wanted new or not, but considering what type of boat you mention you want and how you would use it I thought I would post it. They are good little boats and offer some weather protection

   Salmon:

You seem to place a great deal of emphasis on "banging on rocks and gravel" with respect to how your going to be using your next boat.  If, in fact, that's the case, I'd look very seriously at poly boats; similar to those Smartwaves.  In the long run, I honestly think they might fair better under such service.

I don't know if your still hell-bent on a CC, but if so, Smartwave offers two models.....the so-called 4200, and the slightly larger 4800.  If I'm not mistaken, I believe those numbers simply refer to their respective lengths in meters; i.e., 4.2 vs. 4.8 meters.  If you mostly fish alone, and in protected waters such as lakes and rivers, it seems to me (being inherently lighter and easier to handle) the smaller of the two would suffice.  Don't get me wrong......I have no dog here......just making a suggestion.

Just buy a 18 foot Baja bayrunner  .
Don't settle for the west coaster hold out and get the Baja model.
There out there for pretty cheap .
I almost bought one but got the arima instead .
I've fished in them quite a bit and there solid boats .
You can tow them with a four cylinder truck and they get good fuel mileage .

AlexB, that is a nice boat. Notice in the add he says it's a "deep V". Take a close look, it is almost completely flat. I should know, I fished one for over 15 years. They are a pretty stable boat though. I had no problem with mine and I fished Santa Cruz, SF bay, and all over the Delta and rivers with it. I just have been wanting an Arima for a long time. They are good boats

I think that west coaster is on the right track.  I understand SK's preference for an aluminum boat.  We have lots of ramps with no dock so you have to beach the boat, then there are waves either from wind or the ferries to jostle the boat onto the rocks.  I launch from a no dock ramp and it is tough in rough conditions.
Arima's are easy to launch but a small aluminum is even easier.
Title: Re: I may have found my new boat

The Hewes Craft, Alumaweld etc have a greater hull thickness than the Klamath but those cost 2-3 times as much. For what he says he really wants in a boat for the lake I think it would be hard to find a more affordable aluminum boat. The Westcoaster I mentioned and the Bayrunner Baja are all made by Klamath. And if I'm not mistaken, they have foam floatation built in. :twocents:

One thing to consider... re-sale.

Heavy gauge welded tin cans from known Pacific NW builders don't depreciate in value much, which is why it is so hard to find something like a Hewes Pro-V cheap.  The flip side is when it comes time to sell, they pretty much sell themselves (for brands like North River, Duckworth, and Hewes, they seem to hold their value even better than Arimas).

If you may have sell this boat down the road at some point, that is one thing to consider when pricing against cheaper Smokercrafts, Klamaths, Bayrunners, etc...

Title: Re: I may have found my new boat
Post by: Fisherdv on December 14, 2017, 06:15:52 PM
As much as I liked my Klamath I had the bottom thickness is not that thick. If you plan on beaching or banging around on rocks I would use caution. Although gravel should be fine. The  more offshore oriented Klamath or Bayrunner Baja models have a thicker aluminum hull

I agree with you about the look.  They are deeper, and wider than a standard Bayrunner.
It looks so seaworthy.
Unfortunately this model is extremely hard to come by in our area.  Of course when they do they demand a PREMIUM price.  Owners get ridiculously high dollar for them.
Regular bay runners come up frequently however.

Sounds good SK. I remember you saying you weren't in any hurry to get another boat as you still catch a lot from shore. Waiting may be a good idea. That way you can take your time and get what you really want once you find it. Good luck!

Here's your new boat. The tounge option on the trailer would sell like hot cakes in the northwest.

The problem with that boat is, every time you step on board, you have to be dressed in camouflage.  Hey........it's the law!  I still think one of those Smartwaves is the way to go........at least for what Salmon was planning on doing.   My personal favorite is that SW4800 Cuddy.  15'-7"L, 6'-6"W and 750 lbs?  Man....I'd get pretty exited seeing that with a 60 Honda.  I'd probably even pay a little money to see the performance stats. I think there's a pic, somewhere out there, of one of those with an arch and rocket launcher over the canvas.
