Title: Any interest in a Lead pour this year?
Post by: wedocq on January 22, 2017, 05:08:32 PM
Greg was asking today about a lead pour. Bruce has hosted the last 2 years and has said he's out this year for hosting. Anyone out there interested in hosting? It might be cool if we found a location somewhere near Centralia, WA and that would make the drive from the coast, or Portland a little more doable. Of course that's just an idea. If you are willing to host, we can make it work anywhere!

Molds I have:
Flutter vertical jigs 2 oz, 3 oz, 4 oz, 5oz, 7 oz, 9oz  I have used a single treble, single J hook, or double assist hooks on these effectively.

Bullet nose jig molds that use swim baits. 4oz and 5 oz

Triangle head (forget name) for swim baits. 2ox and 4 oz (I think)

Cannon balls:
For halibut weights: 20oz 24 oz 32 oz
For Columbia river trolling: I need to look again, but I think 12 14 and 16oz

Downrigger ball mold: 15 lbs

Crown Jewel from last year! Norwegian Cod jig mold. I think the weights are 18 24 and 32oz  This mold was paid for by everyone that showed up last year! Thanks guys

I might be missing a few, I will post when I take inventory.

What do you got? Anyone interested???

-Shawn

Yes I'm going-  but no space to host and I'm out of the way on a ridge.

I ordered ( 1 ea ) 2 and 3# flat sided bottom weight Hilts molds that I will bring.

http://hiltsmolds.com/RockCodSinkerMolds.htm

We need to capture some of the safety concerns discussion and get everyone who will attend on board .

Also, some brought clean, ingot lead that weren't paid for it, so better check in / check out procedures should be set up.  It's a good opportunity with some great folks attending-  we don't want to sour things for some.

Pretty good info in this

It looks like I am hosting it.  Lets all figure out who's coming, and what day looks like it will work.

Anybody got a good lead source this year?

Anybody got some lead molds they can bring?

Are you referring to the lead pour, or the fishing derby? Trust me, the lead pour is well worth coming by yourself! Just for the downrigger balls along, its worth it. But we have a lot of other molds that can make some pretty cool things!

Lead Molding Instructions
Before melting your own lead, read and understand all of these important safety rules!
Some Safety Tips
Molding lead is economical, fun, and easy when done properly. We suggest you follow these
simple tips:
1. Always wear gloves and eye protection.
2. Always work in a well ventilated area! Use strong ventilation!
3. Keep the work area around the molten metal dry and free of moisture. This includes the crucible.
Moisture expands when it comes into contact with hot metal. This expansion can cause "splatter"
of the hot metal, and can cause serious burns.
4. NOTICE: We recommend a light coat of Vaseline on your hands, arms, and face. This will help
prevent burns if "splatter" does occur.
5. Always wear a long sleeved shirt, long pants, and shoes.
6. Pre-heat all tools that come into contact with lead.
** See bottom of this page for additional important safety information! **

Liability Disclaimer
Dolphin Sports, Inc., does not accept any liability of any kind for accidents or poisonings by lead
fumes.

Let's Get Started!
Pure lead melts at 621 degrees F., so you must be extremely careful. Lead is alloyed with tin which
melts at slightly less temperature. Most lead is alloyed with antimony, which melts at slightly more
temperature. The best lead to use is "caulking lead." Try to obtain as pure a lead as possible (not
to exceed 6% antimony content). You will mold better quality parts, especially on smaller jigs.

Where to Buy Lead
You may use wheel weights or shot gun shot. Usually junk yards have lead. If you have
any old jig heads that are no longer desirable or have broken hooks, you may also re-melt these.

Melting Lead
Do not use an acetylene torch. You may melt your tools and cause an accident!
The most desirable and safest way is to use a quality lead melting furnace such as those sold by
Dolphin Sports, Inc.

Pre-Heating and Smoking Mold
Place your mold on top of the furnace to pre-heat the mold while the lead is melting. Mold should
sit on the mold sides with both sides in contact of the furnace. Take extra caution not to melt your
plastic handles. These handles are made of PVC and are very strong, but will melt at high
temperatures. If you melt your handles, it's your responsibility. Next, you may want to smoke your
mold. This process is done with a candle and will enable your parts to be released from the mold
easily. The mold cavities should be ugly black when properly smoked. Now let's check and clean
the parting surface of your mold. Carefully inspect for dirt or lead build-up on the parting surface.
Close mold and hold up to light to make sure mold closes completely or your parts will have "flash".
Next, you must check to make sure your hooks, wires, and eyelets fit the mold and the mold closes
completely. Hilts Molds are machined very precise. Hook numbers are on every mold. Our inserts fit our molds. If you use other inserts make sure they fit properly or we disclaim our warranty.

Warming Your Mold
Do not use Acetylene Torch. You must pre-heat your mold and all tools to produce quality parts.
This is easiest done by placing the mold over your lead pot.

Casting Parts
Now close your mold and make some trial parts (without any inserts). Do this 2 or 3 times until
your mold produces a good finished part. A good finished part is a part without visible fracture lines
in the lead. Be careful, without inserts your mold may leak through!
Now put your insert in place. After closing the mold you may lay the mold on your table and gently
tap with a piece of lead to seat inserts or hooks. Make a casting. As soon as your mold is full you
can open it. Lead cools quickly and will not run out.
Any time you stop casting metal for more than 2 minutes, put your mold back over the lead furnace
(as in pre-heating) to keep the mold warm.

Tips
Eyelets sometimes are hard to load into mold. Rub a bar of soap on eyelet cavity. This will hold
eyelet perfectly.
After using your mold a while, it is normal to have lead build up on the parting surface. Remove this
with a file. Be sure the file lays flat. Do not remove any of the mold material.
The lead will load your file. Clean the file by rubbing the edge of a penny from side to side on it.

Removal and Trimming Molded Parts
Casting with larger hooks (spinner baits, larger jigs): These can easily be grabbed by hand and
pulled out. Do not grab newly molded lead! If you cannot grab the hook or wire by hand, pliers must be used to grab the casting at the gate area and remove. Do not use screwdriver or pry casting
loose with anything. You may damage your mold.
Molding small jigs from a bottom pour pot: Bring the mold in firm contact with the spout- lift the
handle- count 1-2-3-4 - release- and open the mold.

Copyright 2002, Dolphin Sports, Inc.
WARNING: Melting lead and casting lead objects will expose
you and others in the area to lead, which is known to cause
birth defects, other reproductive harm, and cancer.
Reducing Exposure: Lead contamination in air, in dust, and on your skin is invisible. Keep children and pregnant women away during use and until clean up is complete. Risk can be reduced -- but not eliminated -- with strong ventilation; washing hands immediately after use of these products before eating or smoking; and careful cleaning of surfaces and floors with disposable wipes, after lead dust has had a chance to settle. Use a lead - specific cleaner with EDTA, or a high - phosphate detergent (like most detergents sold for electric dishwashers), and bag wipes for disposal.
Use strong ventilation

I may be able to come up with more lead if the group needs it.  Shawn, let me know about that.  Al

LEAD is the number 1 thing! People will bring lead and think they are bringing plenty for what they want to make, but inevitably a few things happen along the way.

1) We spill lead

2) People don't always calculate well what they brought

3) People don't calculate that even with real clean lead, we lose a percentage to schlag (impurities), with dirty lead even more.

So first off I would like to say, everyone who has come to these lead pours has been super cool. They have always brought lead, supplies, food and beer. We have always had plenty of help for setup, and tear down. One year we even had a very successful swap meet. (lets do that again!) There's only one area that I have seen problems, and that's having too high of expectation on the amount of product you get, for the amount of lead you bring. So does anyone have any suggestions?
-Shawn

If you see this man let me know. He tried stealing a bunch of lead by trying to hide it on his coat!

WEDOCQ, I missed last year due to travel.  2 years ago there was a 12 pound downrigger ball mold.  Will that be available this year?  I'll turn 75 this year and don't care to use the 15 pounders.  Although I will have no problem pulling up a big halibut.

Last year we took up a collection and bought a Norwegian Cod Jig mold. It worked great last year for halibut and lingcod. Anyone got some ideas for a new mold this year for the lead pour? As far as supplies like eyelets and forms for jigs, I was planning on buying a whole bunch of everything we need, and then putting out a collection jar to cover the costs. No need to bring me PBR. I cut beer from my diet.

This looks like it mike be cool, but I really don't see how much different it would be to the flutter jig molds I have. Now if this was a "flatfall" knockoff, maybe?  :shrug9:

I will be bringing my 12 oz jig mold.  Please see the attached link for the hook specification as I will not be supplying the hooks.  I have purchased them from sportco as singles 12/0 Mustad Siwash for around $1 per hook.

Checked the link - I don't see a hook specified for the 12 jig head......   :shrug9:

Do you have the BS 3 sinker eye inserts?

As our friend Gomer said surprise surprise surprise. I was cleaning my garage. I found a DO-IT 16 oz  spire point jig mold and a box of Mustad 34081D. I'll have them at the pour. I should maybe clean more often.  Rifleman

Does anyone have a 4 oz torpedo mold for rock fishing?

I'm not going to be able to attend the lead pour this year, but I reserved 100 lbs of lead from Rifleman.  If someone attending the pour needs the lead, they can purchase the lead I reserved from him.

Rifleman:  If no one is interested, I will honor my commitment and buy the lead, but I'll have to meet you in Gig Harbor some afternoon to pick it up.

Now that the boat is sort of finished and the fishing seasons are so short, I'm concerned that those hobbies won't leave me suitably broke anymore.  Finishing the shop will ensure a lifetime of destitution, and not having to figure out what to do with money is one less stress in my life.

So if someone going to the lead pour needs lead, I'll give up my share.  If not, I'm more than happy to buy it from Rifleman.  I pretty much buy lead any chance I get.

I have been looking at the weather forecast for this upcoming lead pour. Seems it is going to rain or have showers. My question to the crowd, What if it is not a dry forecast? Are canopies safe enough? Rifleman
