Title: 2000 Sea Chaser
Post by: Chaser2000 on November 11, 2017, 02:37:01 PM
Hello everyone.   I'm happy to tell everyone that as of 3 pm today I own a 2000 19' Sea Chaser. I have been talking with the broker for 3 weeks and just made the deal. The boat has a bad 130 Honda on it now and I'm going to replace it with a 115 Yamaha. What do you think about my motor choice.

Love the boat, love the motor choice!

Unless you plan to load it down with tuna or something, 115 Yamaha should be perfect!

130 is a bit much for a 19SC but doable,  115 is that boat's sweet spot.

You nailed it!  Yami 115 is perfect for a 19!  Get trim tabs and you're good to go.

I run a 115 Suzuki on my 19 SR skip tower and it is the perfect set up.    You will love it.   Congrats on the new boat.

The Honda 130 was a dog, no low end toque , no real top end power. Your way better of with a  115...

I disagree completely. I have a 2004 Honda 130hp 4 stroke and I think it's great on my 2003 21' Sea Ranger Skip Top. I get up to cruising speed just fine and she tops out at around 35mph with a full tank of fuel, 2-3 passengers and gear. Now, are there better motors out there? Definitely. Are there worse motors out there? Of course. Now the 130's had head gasket and cracked head problems, I verified mine wasn't a serial number that was effected by a bad casting. Did you have a 130 and are speaking from experience or just word of mouth? What kind of prop.... size, fins and pitch did you have? All of those things will effect low end torque, top end speed and time to get up on a plane.

Did you buy this from the guy back in Maryland?

Thanks Guys.  Thank you for all of the feedback. This boat was in Maryland but it's not the one down in Ocean City that had a of the bad comments about the 130 hp Honda. Maryland rockfish goes out on Dec. 20 hoping to get the boat in time to chase a few rockfish.

Like Mustang, my 21HT came with a 130.  It was an excellent motor in every way.  Only reason I sold it was to get a new motor that I know it's care and maintenance.

I'm envious, you bought a nice rig. You will LOVE the boat, nice to start out with the new Yami motor. I think you would have been happy with the Honda as well if it was a runner.

Enjoy everyday in the quest for your bounty!

I rode in a 19' sea ranger with a yami 150.............. the extra power was nice and it didn't seem to be weight issue on the transom..........can anyone with a yamaha 150 comment?

I owned a 19 convert with a 115 which weighs 400 lbs.  Now I have a 21 HT- longer hull plus the cabin weight up front to balance it out and have the 150 @ 500 lbs.  I wouldn't add a 500 lb motor on a 19.  I'd even consider one of the Suzuki 115's due to their lower weight.
More weight in a boat butt is usually not a good thing for performance and safety.

The Yami 115 will be sweet! Spend the extra change to find the perfect prop and you'll be very happy.  Lots of threads on here with results from different props to get you started.  The Yami Talon SDS Prop 14P gets my vote for best all around performer.  Oh and yes we need to see pics...

I had a 2000 Sea Chaser 19 with a 100 HP Yamaha for six years prior to selling it this summer.  The 100 HP was all the power that was needed including going offshore for tuna trolling with total distance traveled well over 100 miles while carrying a heavy load.  I never burned through the full 45 gallon tank of gas in a day.

With my Sea Chaser I had to be careful about excess weight in the stern while backing into a chop.  With the weight from a full gas tank, main and kicker motor, two batteries, and maybe a couple big people trying to land a fish the waves can come into the motor well and the boat if you don't plug the holes where the cables and lines go through the hull. I strived to move weight forward and minimize weight in the stern.

The Yamaha 115 was the clear choice when I considered a new motor for the boat although I couldn't justify it when the 100 HP was running fine.

The F100 is a great motor and produces lots of low end torque. It performed comparably to the new 115 I replaced it with on my 19 Ranger.

Where do you live in Maryland. I am currently in Portland Or and moving back east next summer. Going to be pulling my 21 skip top back with me. It will be making its second trip back to the East. Bought it from a guy that had purchased it as a second boat for his place in Florida and decided did not need it. Will be looking to learn how to chase rock fish. I will be relocating to South Bethany Beach DE.

Hey fishing guy.  I keep the boat in Middle River Md,it's about 3 miles from the boat ramp. Let me know when you are in Maryland we can go out and I'll should you what I know. We use planner boards in the spring and fall, lots of chumming in the summer. There is a great fishing club here in Md, MSSA check it out.

At the risk of not agreeing with the group here, I have a 19HT Ranger with the 115 yammy and feels it is minimum at times! When I have a couple guys, lots of gear and a 9.9 kicker, dual batteries and a full gas tank, it takes a bit to get on plane. Ive tried two SS propellers and although one performs better than the other, the boat still feels sluggish when loaded.

When im fishing on my own, even with gear, it does perform very well, is very smooth and economical to operate. The yammy 115 only has 300hrs on it so a new engine is not gonna happen anytime soon. I have a friend with a 19'SC with a 150 yammy (two stroke) and his boat flies! The trim tabs would help (if I used them) but I still dream of all the power 150 ponies would feel like out of the hole!

I'm with ya Eivin, I'm with the thought group that likes being equipped with max horse power. At times I think my 17 SC is under powered with the Yamy 115 4 stroke, although I have a new 4 blade prop on it with only 30 minutes time on it so I will soon see if I feel like I'm lacking grunt power.  I acknowledge these boats aren't built for speed and for my ocean only use speed is not usually a factor,  but when I want to go I WANT TO GO!

Not to be snarky, but I always get a kick out of these threads.

Maxing out the power on an Arima in hopes of seeing a substantial performance gain is like trying to cram a big block v8 into a Corolla.  It's still not going anywhere very fast.

If you've got the $$ go for it, but if you are feeling a need for more speed than a 115 can give a 19' Arima, you are probably better off investing in a different style hull.

To expound on what Threeweight says:   Performance is most likely dictated by the aspect ratio of these Arimas than anything else. These are short, fat boats, so they act accordingly.   I believe what these hulls take away in top speed they more than make up for in stability.

I've got a 2003 21' Skip Top with only a Honda 130hp four stroke on it, or 15hp more than the 115hp engine on your 19'.  Mine tops out around 35mph and gets up on a plane pretty quick, even with a good deal of weight and people in the boat.  I agree on the prop size, pitch and number of fins as it will change your RPM, planing time and overall speed at WOT depending on which prop you use.  I was surprised to see that a 90hp engine is what Arima recommends for their 19' boats but considering... a 115hp motor should be more than adequate/fast enough for you.  Oddly enough they even recommend only a 115hp on the 21' SR HT.  Per the Arima boats website it says the 19' SR HT is 1725lbs vs the 21' SR HT and Skip Top are 2150lbs, although I'm guessing that's a typo as I'd have to think a HT would be at least a couple hundred pounds heavier than a Skip Top.  Anyway, I did a couple horsepower to weight ratios below and while I do agree that a 90hp motor on a 19' SR HT would be considerably small, same with a 115hp motor on a 21' SR HT, the 115hp engine on a 19' SR HT has about the same horsepower to weight ratio as a 21' SR HT with a 150hp engine and would have to think that a 150hp engine on a 19' SR HT would just be way overkill.  Now obviously these figures aren't going to be exact as larger sized engines are going to be heavier than smaller ones, example would be a 90hp motor vs a 150hp motor, but I'm thinking they can't be too terribly far off.

19' SR HT
90hp/1725lbs  = .0521
115hp/1725lbs   = .0667
150hp/1725lbs   = .0869

21' SR HT
135hp/2150lbs   = .0627
150hp/2150lbs   = .0697
175hp/2150lbs   = .0813

Agree with 3Wt, if you're looking for top end speed you have the wrong boat.  If you want to get out of the hole with a load get trim tabs.

I think it's more about aspect ratio than weight.  A 17 foot Arima is 8 feet wide..........so is a 21 Arima.  Guess which one is more likely to have the edge in terms of performance.  Think rowing hull.
