Hey Guys

I have a 1989 Sea Sprinter that I need to replace the steering system. I cannot turn it now and would like some advice on what to get and where to get. What is the difference between the Steering Cable and the Hydraulic Hoses? I would appreciate any advice.

I assume you have cable steering.  Disconnect the steering cable from the engine to determine if it is  the steering cable or the engine steering tube.  IMO the current mechanical steering systems that are available are sealed units that will only last a few years.  Hydraulic steering is more expensive but once you experience the smooth operation you will be impressed.

Yes Cable Steering. I disconnected it from the engine and it is still difficult to turn. I can but not much and I am afraid of it snapping on me on the water. Where do I get the replacement cable steering and also which hydraulic steering do you recommend? If I switch to hydraulic do I need to change the steering wheel? Thank you for you help Chief.

Arima installs SeaStar hoses because they are more flexible and you don't have to cut them.  Your old steering wheel will work if you don't break it pulling it off.  Search this site there is quite a few threads on hydraulic steering.  Some will say your only running a 50 you don't need it.  My response I have an Arima!

Here is a reworked table to guide you in cable selection. The highlighted information may or may not be correct. I am trying to get some verification from Arima.

It shows your steering cable should have been a 14' cable. (The 15' you saw was a boat length.)

Good morning

Here is a pic of the end and it does say 14 ft. My question is how is it measured? I measured the old one and from the connection to the steering hosing to the end of the cable plastic jacket itself where it is screwed into the motor. The 15 ft just seems about 2 feet too long. Your thoughts please... Much appreciated.

When looking at the chart I see 13' and 14' for my Sprinter.  Is this meant to be read as a range of working lengths?

If I'm reading the chart right, it's control cable length, boat model, steering cable length, finally hydraulic hose length if you're lucky enough to have that.
